Great day for shooting!

Post by RMulhern on Sat Nov 05, 2011 9:35 am

A buddy over in East Texas sent me some hollow-base bullets to try in my Shiloh 45 2 7/8 and today was a fantastic day for trying them. After suffering through 110F+ summer heat in July/August and most of September without shooting it's a real pleasure to get back out on the range again in late October. It's 60F here today and a great day for trigger pulling. Was testing the bullets from 300 yards and they do shoot well. Load was 102 grs. KIK 1F powder with a WLR primer, .320" thick lube cookie fired through Norma cases. Didn't have a zero with these bullets but fired 10 rounds and the last 7 hit in a cluster I could cover with the knuckles of my fist! Bullet weighs in at 498 grs. and I patch with .0025" paper up to an OD of .447". Bullet has a flat meplat of around .180" and cast 1-30 alloy should make a good game bullet.

Thanks! Quite often...especially as hunting season nears I do what I call 'one shot exercises' where I go to the range....stop at a random location and I take a reading with my rangefinder. I have zeros on my Sharps all the way from 60 yds. back through 600 yds. in 25 yard increments. I'll usually be at a midpoint betwixt known ranges so it's a matter of interpolating the sight setting. I fired this today from 435 yds. with a stiff wind coming from 4 o/clock! Loaded the gear and went back to the house! Nothing like shooting good paper patch ammo!! About 1/2" lower and I'd a smacked the thru-bolt holding my 20" clanger to the mainframe! Bullet 'creased' the head of the bolt at 11 o/clock.
