some guns prefer cheap ammo...

Post by Joe S. on Sun 6 Nov 2011 - 9:59

Was at the range this morning dialing in my stepson's 308 and a buddy's 270 Ruger MK2. Got it on paper at 100 with some cheap Federal powershocks then switched to Hornady Custom. Started getting frustrated when I couldn't get better than 2.5" groups. Finally on a whim I switched back to the powershocks and instly my groups tighted to about an inch. I'd have never thought that would have happened.

I used to have a cheap Rem. 788 in .308...it liked the cheap stuff for some reason too. Good thing too, didn't have as much to spend back then either LOL.

Cheap is just not in my vocabulary any more when it comes to guns and ammo....I've never "saved" anything by being cheap...so I've quit

5 shots in a inch at 100 don't make the cut for me...even for hunting ammo

5 shots in one hole should be the standard at 100 yards for a 308

That's why u roll your own

U there when you can put 5 in one hole at 300...u aint gonna do that with factory

Accuracy takes serious dedication...How good is good....? I dunno...I want BEST...Takes time to do it

Strive for excellence....in everything you do....Never "settle" for 2nd best if you don't have to...

I have a ton of fun in the striving for accuracy.....I struggled all year with it in F class lol

You see Joe S.

When I was in BP yesterday looking for some Federal Premium 7mm-08 with Barnes TSX to deer hunt with....ya'll did not have em

I could have bought that cheap $19 a box Remington Core-Lokt crap which I know is s**t ammo...

Instead I bought some 7mm-08 dies and some Barnes TSX bullets just like I wanted...
already had the primers cause 7mm-08 is a derivative of 308....they also use the same powders pretty much

Now I have a fun way to piddle away the day loading and testing 7mm-08 till I find one just right....lots of satisfaction in doing that....

much like what you get from fixing your own cars (which I can't do)

Its the same thing...

Now back to "prepping" 7mm-08 brass Razz

I got lucky. My .308 hunting rifle likes the Hornady Superformance 150 SST's. It will put 3 into just over an inch at 200 yards. I may try to work up some loads for it, but that is plenty accurate enough for me to hunt with. And, it's way more accurate than some I have hunted with before.

Now, when I get my F-T/R back from Dixie Precision, 1" at 200 will not be good enough. I want 1/2" at 200!

I'm looking forward to the challenge! I'm going to have to start working out to beef up my shoulders to deal with those 208's!

Back on topic, and that's 1" groups at 100 yards with factory ammo out of an unmodified rifle being satisfactory and how some rifles are capable of that with CHEAP, yea I said it, CHEAP! ammo.

Deer don't mind if you're shooting one hole at 100 yards when that ball of lead hits him at 100 yards with a well placed shot. Razz

Agree with Joe on this, a deer doesnt care what you use to kill it. All this talk about better ammo doesnt matter nearly as much as shot placement does. Saying one bullet will kill it better than another is like saying a ford would kill it better than a chevy or toyota if you hit it with one.... you hit it in the heart, head or other vitals and its just as dead regardless of the ammo or vehicle used.

i know i def shoot cheap ammo. i use rem core lokt, and have since i first got my 243.. never lost a deer, and never had one go further than 50 yards.. on the other hand i have killed deer with 22lr in lesser than light situations.. all about the placement.. i would be proud to own a rifle that loves cheap ammo.. lol

Until last year, I had only used Hornady Custom Ammo, which I would call "cheap." I have always had acceptable results. Some deer dropped and some ran a ways. Last year, the two deer I killed were with Federal soft points out of a .243. They were under $15 per box. One dropped and one ran a ways. This year I will be using Hornady Superformance. I like using factory ammo to hunt with, but for maximum accuracy, they won't get it done.

That's true. We hunt, not target shoot so we are happy with minute of deer. Very Happy
