300 wsm and 300 win mag

Post by deerhunter86 on Sun Nov 06, 2011 2:23 pm

I have a 300 wsm and 2 win mags and want some input on reloads for deer . I have 150 gr ballistic tips and 168 grain amax and 168 grain berger hunting . Which one has the best chance of making critters drt without breaking shoulders or spine . Have used ballistic tips for all my hunting rounds for many years and have not lost anything . The amaxs have only been tested on canines . And no experience with bergers. I just wanna try Somthing new .

My experience with ballistic tips is that they are ALL good for deer. From the 125's to the 180's. DRT without hitting the shoulders or spine is not always a shure thing. Through the lungs will leave you with a blood trail for at most 50 yards (follow the red road). But in some spots that can be too far. Port Gibson for sure.

The A-max is a target bullet, I would not trust it for anything but head and neck. Bergers (hunting) bullets work great. The target bullet will work for head and neck shots.

I'd shoot 180's out of a 300 Win Mag

Everything I've ever shot with a Nosler Ballistic tip was DRT when I pressed trigger.

Berger Hunting bullets suppose to be bad ass as well...have not tried any

Not a Amax fan

My fav hunting bullet is Barnes TSX

Ive taken deer with 210gr bergers in my 300wm. Works like a champ. Ive never tried anything else thru it but 190gr smk and that was for grouping.
I never shoot them in the shoulders. Messes up too much meat with bone frags. Its either a head/neck shot or behind the shoulder.
But then again i havent had a problem dropping them with my 223 or 6.8. So I dont use my win mag unless im goin for 300+yds.
Tryin 210gr sierra match kings this year.

I like the heavier bullets for some reason, even in 223.

I use the 180 sst, in my 300 been having really good luck so far, all have dropped in their tracks except one. I made a really poor shot, that deer gut shot only made it around 75 yards.
