Discovered S&W DA/SA Autos

Post by Buff on Mon 7 Nov 2011 - 4:28

Relatively new to firearms (couple of years) and recently discovered the older Smiths. Got me and my son a couple of 5906s. A couple of weeks later, got a 915. Man, these guns are great. The 5906's are LE trade ins (Atlanta Corrections) I got off Gunbroker and the 915 I got off Auction Arms. All of them shoot great and you can feel the quality when you hold the guns. All of them less than 300.00 each.

Nothing wrong with the 59 series. Got one myself that I've had a long time:

Always thought the 39 would make a great flat carry gun.

Those are some fine little pistols. The price is usually right. I've been considering getting one. Any experience carrying one of these? Is the weight manageable?

The 5903 is a little lighter because it's frame is AL alloy instead of stainless. I carried my 5903 for 3 years in a no name duty holster and a cheap IWB uncle Mike's. I don't recall it being a problem, of course my other carry gun at the time was a 357 revolver. Some say the grip is too wide, but that is user preference I suppose.

Now it spends time as a truck/tractor/shed gun. It will eat any ammo I've put in it and believe me.....I ran some real garbage through it back in the 90's.

Not mine. It's safety was also a decocker.

It is more beretta-ish. Put it on safety and it decocks it.

I have a 915. It is a GREAT shooter!

I have a 4506, its a good shooter, solid as a rock! But weighs about 50 lbs!! My lil bro is about to talk me out of it and I'd like a lil bit smaller one in 9 or 40 cal.

I made the same "mistake" as Buff a year or so ago, bought an older all-metal Smith semi...I now have ten or more...still need more. But for the price, can't pass'em up.

There are LOTS of variations/models to suit most any need or taste. My favorite range gun is the 5906. For carry I pick between a 3953, CS9, or 3913. They're all single-stack, compact 9mm's. I usually choose the 3953 because it's DAO, which I prefer in a carry gun. Drop it in a Crossbreed Supertuck with a good belt and you'll forget it's there.

Also have a 4046, which is the only .40 I've ever enjoyed shooting. All that weight soaks up recoil. And I love the .22's, have 4 of them (so far Smile )

Be careful, these are pretty addictive.
