AR-15 ammo question...

Post by ufgators68 on Mon Nov 07, 2011 7:37 am

I have a DPMS AR-15, with a 16" heavy barrel and a 1:9 twist rate, what would be the best round to use in this setup for hunting?

I want to use a BTHP bullet, just don't know what weight to go with. I have been told that the 1:9 twist rate would work best with 60-67 grain ammo??

Rule of thumb is that 1:9 is ok for up to 68gr or so. Shot placement and type of projectile are important too. Heavier ones will work, but might keyhole. 62gr is supposed to be the overlap spot for 7 or 9 twists.

Would it even be worth trying 75 grain ammo? I know where a few boxes of Hornady Match ammo is on sale.

If it's cheap enough, sure. Just take it too the range to see how it groups and get some idea of its trajectory in your 1:9.

I use 68gr hpbt in my 9 twist and 75gr hpbt in my 7 twist.
I had one 9 twist that wouldnt group 60gr or heavier. But grouped 52gr amax like a champ.

Give it a try and save your brass.

They're $15 a box. I will probably grab a box and try them out.

My wife has taken over my ar-15 and now that she's completely comfortable with it, she wants to go deer hunting a few times. I don't think she'd be able to handle the recoil of my 25-06 or 30-06, that's why I'm looking for heavier ammo, and don't want to cause her to start any bad shooting habits.

If she happens to knock one down and likes it, I'll get her a more appropriate rifle.

Speaking of the AR thief... she's been shooting for a month and has gone from never even holding a rifle to hitting 16 out of 20 skeet at 75 yards.

.223 loaded with barnes tsx will get the job done quite well.

I aint a big fan of 223 for deer hunting...That said I'd be giving a barnes tsx a whirl

Personally I don't think your wife would have any issue at all with a 25-06..about twice the recoil from 5 lbs lbs to 9 lbs

http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

or roughly a 243 Win

manageable

Don't know why people keep putting a .223 down as a deer rifle.

Weight- 224 lbs.
Distance- 142 yards
Round- 60 grain Nosler Partition
Rifle- Olympic Arms AR-15
Rounds Fired- 1
Distance Deer Traveled After Shot- Approx. 15 feet
Where Killed- Avoyelles Parish

Its all in shot placement. Ive killed more deer and hogs in 3 months with my 223 than most kill in a lifetime.
If you wanna get her an AR for deer hunting, look into a 7 twist barrel. 75gr match bullets work amazingly well. Along with 77gr nosler custom competitions.
Or one chambered in 6.8spc, 110gr sierra prohunters work great too and very very little difference in recoil between 223 and 6.8 in the same weight rifles.

Well, now that you've opened the door to alternate calibers, lol, my current deer rifle is a 6.5 Grendel on an AR platform. Low recoil and I use 120 grain TSX bullets. I can go up to 150 grain if I want to hunt something bigger than deer.

I've thought about getting a new upper, in the calibers y'all mentioned, or 243 but you can buy a decent rifle/scope for the cost of a good upper.

I brought that up to her and she didn't have a preference but if I had to guess, she would want a rifle that she can call her own. That way I can paint it pink/black/grey camo.

I love mine in .223, thats what i let kids use deer hunting. Loaded with 68gr ppu match bullets with alot of h322 = 3080fps.
