.308 question

Post by p moore on Tue Nov 08, 2011 7:24 am

For some reason, I think I want/need a .308. I am a very frugal gun shopper, so I am looking for a bolt action under the $400 ish range.

I have seen several Savage, Mossberg, Marlin, Stevens, and Weatherby rifles. I saw something different last night. A Mosin–Nagant, that someone replaced the stock on. This one is said to give the Mosin more of a floating barrel.

My questions are:
Have any of you guys seen or shot one of these, and which variant Mosin would be best for this conversion?

I like the looks and history of the Mosin, but would love to have the reliability and performance in a modern package.

Check this website. They have an interesting design about 1/3rd of the way down the page.

Don't know about the Mosin variants but, as far as quality-for-price in a modern factory rifle, I would suggest the T/C Venture.

You could snatch up a stevens 200 in 308 and throw a factory savage varmit barrel on there and be dang close to your $400 mark and be a dang good shootin rifle.

Savage axis, was looking at them earlier on buds. $282 shipped, cant beat that. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/70946

If you want one local, some wal marts carry them. All can order them. Price should be close to buds

Northland shooter supply use to have some .308 savage varmint/tactical barrels for $125. But now they are almost $200 and no .308s instock.
Doh.

One thing I just noticed about the Molsin, alot of them are chambered in 7.62x54. I know I have seen them in 7.62x51, just don't see them right now. What do I need to look for, or where.

Still leaning toward the Savage, Weatherby. The Wetherby gen 2 is said to be a 1.5 moa out of the box. Not too bad, and I know it can get better with a little tweeking.

Nagants were never chambered in 7.62x51, only 7.62x54. I have never seen one converted to x51.

That would explain it. I guess the couple of listings I have seen were typos.

While you are looking, look at a Marlin x7vh. It's their version of a varmint rifle in 22-250 and 308. It has Marlin's version of an accu-trigger with a 26" heavy barrel.

Get a Remington Model 7 in .308 and forget about all the rest.

I my opinion I would go with the Remington 700. I have one and it will shoot sub moa with proper ammo. I hand load and at 100 yard it will shoot 1 hole groups. I like the strength of the action and the ajustablity of the trigger. Forget the Moslin and get a Remington. I have bought a Marlin XR-7 in 7mm 08 for my daughter and she can shoot 1 hole groups at 50 so either are good shooters
