Most accurate factory .270 loads

Post by Matt K on Tue Nov 08, 2011 8:33 am

What would ya'll think the most accurate "economy" factory .270 load would be, besides 130 gr corelokts? I'm getting about a 4-5" group at 100 with those out of a brand new barrel. Trying to get the new barrel to shoot without trying to find the perfect balance point for the forend, since this will be a hunting rifle. I'd settle for 2 moa, but 4+ won't cut it.

Note: I have no interest in any of T/C's products, except, maybe the Icon.

I've had good luck with Federal's Power-Shok 130gr out of my stock Browning A-bolt. Having said that, though, I get <1 MOA out of it using Corelokt ammo.

Bottom line, I think, is get single boxes of several different kinds and see which one works best in your rifle.

my friends ruger m77 shot 1" groups at 100 yards with federal power shocks... maybe your rifle will like them?

what kind of rifle is it?

also, lima4specter loads ammo and is awesome! he could mix you some up for (i think) $1.25 per round and a $10 setup fee... that is the route i would take... he did some 444 marlin ammo for me and i went from 2.5-3" groups at 50 (iron sights, rem core lokts) to about 1" with his handloads.

Forgot to mention it is a Handi rifle barrel. The original .444 barrel is lights out accurate. I know they can be finicky about where pressure is applied to the forearm, but I want to find something that is accurate regardless of where a reasonable amount of pressure is applied, since it will be used for hunting.

I double checked the scope base from the factory and it is tight. Scope is a new Redfield 4-12X40 in steel Warn rings, and I'm pretty sure it is not moving.

Some handis can be finicky about ammo period. Try shooting it without the forend attached and see if it tightens up any

I have always shot core-lokts, but my brother in law has an identical gun to mine (mod 700) and his won't group with core-lokts to save its life. He experimented with a couple and found some Hornadys that he likes. Only problem is they may not be as economical as you would like. - John

There's an old computer saying...

"Garbage In....Garbage Out"...

I use cheap Corelokts to get on paper...or to break in a new barrel...because of one thing...they ARE cheap

Ive got a rem 700 sps .270 and it doesnt like corelokts even after loading them myself. It loves 140gr bergers tho.
It wont group for nothing if it has any pressure on the forened. Put a sandbag under the magazine floorplate and its an amazi g difference. Grouping 3 cold bore shots in 8.5" at 1000yds on 2 differnt days. I would say thats acceptable.

Never had good luck in grouping factory ammo, but i always used rem 130gr corelokts in my remington 7400 growing up before i reloaded.

140gr winchester accubonds.. had great luck with them. took a gun shooting 4" groups 130gr honadys sst, to a half inch gun. nothing else was changed on the gun. right bullets for the right gun makes for all the difference in the world..

Federal Power Shok is an inexpensive alternative to Remington Cor-lock...if 130 grain bullets are not giving you the results you want you may want to try a heavier, 140 or 150 grain, bullet...Years ago I had a Remington 700 .270 that would not shoot anything but Cor-locks in under a 1-1.5 inch group at 100 yards...I tried a 150 grain bullet and got less than one inch groups...sometimes it's an expensive PINTA to find the right rifle bullet combination with factory ammo,...and sometimes not,...it was that hit or miss selection method (pardon the pun) that got me into reloading.
