Ruger 10 22 threaded barrel

Post by southernconnection on Tue Nov 08, 2011 5:05 pm

Has anyone threaded a standard barrel on a Ruger 10 22? Did you have it done by a gunsmith or did you thread it yourself? If you threaded the barrel yourself did you have any issues? How does the threading affects the safety of the barrel?

Thanks in advance

Barrel needs to be large enough in diameter to have some shoulder for the attachment to shoulder against.
Needs to be threaded in a lathe to be in-line with the bore.
Don't try to thread with a die!

The factory barrek can be threaded. I just get it chopped off right behind the front sight and threaded 1/2-28.
If the threading isnt concentric to the bore then your suppressor becomes a muzzle obstruction instead of silencer.

I am no pro, though I have threaded some 10/22 barrels to 1/2 X 28 with dies with no issues this way. The barrel must be turned down in a lathe anyway. I do not have reduction gearing on my small lathe for threading so I use a die. As you know, if you set up between true centers, the planes will be parallel. After turning, place barrel in the chuck, with die at the tailstock and thread by hand turning the lathe chuck. Also made steel thread protectors basicly the same way using a bottom tap. Just for information.
