All of the models of the Mosin Nagant

Post by rdj94a on Wed Nov 09, 2011 9:16 am

Seems like not much left out there but 91/30's and 44's, but there are alot of different models as Doug can attest, I agree with him the 39 Finns are the best shooters, however I like the M91's (early) that are not Finn marked. With all of the Russian markings they just scream history to me. One tough battle rifle that will go bang every time!

If you want to see literally ALL of the variants of the MN, check out Karl-Heinz Wrobel's 2 volume work.

I have a 1910 Izzy Model 91 that shoots awesome. The bore is dark and pitted but it still shoots great. I've gotten 2" groups with it off the bench at 100yds.

that's a sweet one you got there.....have you ever tried to use Brass Wool on the bore to get the pitting off?

I have one now that there isnt much info on, a 1891/59 carbine. Very little is know about them, apparently they were post war conversions from a 91/30. There is no bayonet nor lug for one. The way to tell what it is that the higher range markings on the rear sight base are milled off and its marked 1891/59 below the date on the receiver.

I've got one of those too.

It's easy to get confused between the 91/59, the 91/38, and the M-38.

The front sight base is slightly different on the 91/59's and M-38's than on the 91/38. The difference between the 91/59 and the M-38 is the length of the rear sight. The 91/59 has the longer rear sight and the M-38 has the shorter one.

All of this is according to the ID tool at 7.62x54R.net. Pretty neat thing:

That ID tool is amazing. I never knew there were so many variations.

There used to be a store in Byram (VanBuren Jewelers) that had over 60 variation of the MN hanging on the wall. I used to go in and talk with him. He knew all the history and details of each one. He moved to a new location but hasn't hung up the guns again. He said due to health reasons he couldn't do it.

how long do you think it will take the prices to go up to around at least 200 per MN and start to see a lot less of the MN's around?? thinking

Never saw all the NMs; but did see a boat load of Enfields he had on the walls .... asked to buy a couple -- NO GO!!

I dug one out that I have had for years 1913 that is all Russian even though the czar's eagle is peened out. Real piece of history I love them.

$200 sold it to a dealer. Probably should have just kept it but that is money that went toward my new STI fund. It looked like brand new inside and out, but shot 3 feet to the left at 100 yards.
