Re: Confirming Hunting Load Accuracy - M48 7mm-08 - Ten shot group
Bullet - I gotta say U post some of the finest groups I've seen..especially with what I've always considered to be a so so bullet...accubond...I just can't warm up to em...
I need to get over it I see...cause man the results are pretty.....you ever shoot groups at longer distances. ? 100 yards don't thrill me either But I understand you might not have a choice....and these are huntin rounds
Picky aint I

I went to the range Friday and tested some of the loads my friend suggest and also tweaked my load with RL-17. I forgot my shooting mag and had to shoot today using a waded up shirt and a little piece of styrofoam to support the butt of my stock but I finally got what I want with the 145gr Speer. The H4350 and Varget did not preform velocity wise at all to my satisfaction.
Here is a 10 shot group with two called flyers, the best I could do this morning considering my rest.
145gr Speer SBT, 47.1grs of RL-17 (near max for my gun, work up to this) Fed 210 primers and Nosler brass, and COAL of 2.770" moving on average for ten shots at 2917fps. Not the best group but I have what I want in my hunting load for this bullet. Little site adjustment and I have a 245 zero with it being -5" at 310yds.

Here is a four shot group at 300yds.

Here is a ten shot group at 400yds

Here is my best five shot group at 500yds

Here is a six shot group at 200yds

Here is a six shot at 300yds.

That is great accuracy out of a hunting rifle. I have a 1937 made Winchester Model 70 in .270 WCF, that performs the same way at 100 yrds (5/8" 10 shot groups) with 90 gr Sierra, 130 gr Sierra SPBT or 150 gr Sierra SPBT handoads. It is a treasure to have a hunting rifle that shoots well. As Colonel Townsend Whelen said: "Only accurate rifles are interesting". My Dad bought the rifle in November 1937, for $64.00. It was new. I always admired it, mostly because Jack O'Conner wrote so much about the .270 WCF in Outdoor Life. I was given the rifle upon his death in 1960. I don't hunt with it anymore. I use a Mauser .243 Winchester, I put together from parts in 1999. It does not shoot as well as the Winchester but it is close to MOA at 200 yards with bullets over 80 grains. I don't mind if I scratch the Mauser a bit in the woods. I do shoot the Model 70 at our rifle range every year and it seldom has to be resighted.
Congratulations on the Nosler rifle,

what I also find just as interesting is getting a rifle to shoot that maybe you thought did not make the cut

Yes, that is so true and once you get it to shoot, it becomes a very interesting rifle, revolver or pistol

A friend of mine who does a lot of shooting and load development has been trying for a long time to get me to try RL-17 and I am glad I did. I was so satisfied with so many other powders that I have used through the years that I put him off on the RL-17 for a while but glad I finally tried it. If you want velocity and a clean burning powder, the RL-17 is a good one indeed.
