ammonia and water

Post by Doggy1953 on Fri Nov 11, 2011 8:56 pm

Has anyone tried mixing household ammonia and water to clean the bore out at the range after firing corrosive ammo? Figured that if windex has ammonia in it and it works for the bores, it would be cheaper to mix your own solution. Any ideas on this? Smile

Last few times out with surplus ammo i have just used a can of automotive brake cleaner to flush the bore out and wash the bolt off, no rust no corrosion no issues whatsoever.

Hot boiling water is all you need. All the ammonia does is break down the surface tension of the water, but if it's hot you don't need it. Boiling hot water expands the cracks and crevaces holding the salts and flushes them away. The hot water will dry almost instantly, it does not harm or rust you bore.

I use about a quart just to be safe.
