Powder Scale and Dispenser Combo

Post by Ron Adams on Sat Nov 12, 2011 12:32 pm

What is your opinion both Pro and Con of the RCBS ChargeMaster 1500 Powder Scale and Dispenser Combo ?
It has alot of good reviews but in the last couple years the reviews have not been so good .

We reload on one. It's better with some powders than others. Varget does not dispense consistently but H335 is great!

Been using a chargemaster for a few years. Like it better than anything else I have tried. Old eyes can see the large digital numbers

I love mine. Perfect for working up a load. I have no idea if the cheaper ones are as good, but I can't imagine them being better.
I came from a PACT unit where the two units had to be positioned so the IR signals could be "seen" by both units. I required a calibration for any powder change.
The CM calibrates itself during the first charge. Because of this, the first charge thrown is always 0.5-1.5gn over.
When I want the correct dispensed charge count, I simply set the initial charge to 2.0gn under what I want. When that charge is dispensed, I than enter the correct charge and hit "dispense" again.
Depending on the powder, it will some times throw 0.1gn over the target (and very occasionally 0.2gn over). I simply take my finger and touch the powder to pick up a few kernels. This usually gives the correct weight.
I generally use a Lee PTE die with a Lee powder funnel on top for working up pistol loads.
Finally, it will almost always dispense a charge while I am seating a bullet on the prior charged case. If you have a pet load, you can change the dispense speed settings to get that particular charge dispensed much faster by reprogramming the scale.

I've had mine for about six months now and I love it. It's been accurate so far and no issues. It definitely helped improve my Vintage Match score with my 1903A3.

Had mine for about a year now, no problems so far. Check it often with a set of weights that I purchased. Dead on everytime.

The reports I've read are that they use the same 750 scale in them..which is a $75 scale with a motor on it when you get down to the nutt cuttin

I don't trust my RCBS 750 scale unless its left on all the time and even then I check it frequently with check weights...I have to recalibrate it often...it only gets trusted to weigh bullets

I just can't bring myself to trust one for F class powder charges...I've never had any issue with my 10-10.....its slow as Christmas...but its accurate

I've had my Chargemaster for a little over a year and love it. The main powder I've loaded with it is Varget. One thing I've noticed is that you should never pick up the pan and load the case as soon as you hear the beep. The unit will dispense the charge (say 42 gr) and then beep when finished/stable and display the correct weight (42), next it will show the number of charges you have dispensed and then it will re-display the weight of the charge. It is at this point that I've noticed it will display the "true" charge. Most of the time it is dead on, but about 20% of the time it is a tenth of a grain or two high. These high loads go back in the hopper and I let the unit try again.

I own both of the RCBS electronic scales, the 750 and the 1500 that come with the combo/Chargemaster. I calibrate before each use and have found both scales to be extremely accurate (according to my Lyman check weights). PROS: Accurate (most of the time) and quick. CONS: It's not perfect, be patient.

I've been loading with my 1500 about a year and a half. It works very well with ball powders. However, with extruded it can be off occasionally, but not often enough to be an issue.
You can also find instructions on the Internet to speed it up.

Its that ocassionally part that bothers me

I'm looking at a Sartorious scale...it will weight down to 2/100th of a grain vs 1/10

Same price pretty much

There are 4 kernels of Varget to .10 grain, so I just have a small spoon and adjust the grains accordingly. Doesn't slow me down.

Neck, if you go with that Sartorius, buy an Omega Two-Speed Powder Trickler to go with it. Drop a charge just short with a powder thrower and then trickle up. That trickler is AWESOME! It will trickle one grain of Varget.

Which Sartorius scale? and where do you buy from. All I have seen are around $2000, to much for me. Am I looking at the wrong ones?

I think he's talking about the AYY-123. There are several brand names that market that same scale. Sinclair carries it for @$200.

Sorry! I thought they were a little cheaper than that. Acculab is another company that markets the same scale. Not sure how much they sell for.
