Long Range Pistol Shooting

Post by rcpylon on Sat Nov 12, 2011 10:48 pm

I got to practice shooting long range with a pistol today at 50 and 100 yards. Surprisingly it was pretty easy to hit a target. 50 yards was pretty much spot on with the sights, just a hold of a few inches high (around 3-4 in). For 100 yards, hits still came but had to hold a lot higher (around 1-2 feet). simply put, for me 50 yrs in- hold a little high on center mass, for 100 yards- hold just above target.

I got to try this with short and long versions of the same model of pistol and the results were basically identical (S&W M&P 9mm 5" pro and 3.5" compact). i also found out my laser on my compact was way off at these distances. i had sighted it in at 50 ft but now I'll have to adjust it my next range time when i have my tools with me, lol.

If you haven't tried this yet, go ahead! it was a lot of fun. Smile

Its a ton of fun shooting a 1911 at 250-300yds.
We were at the full auto shoot in oklahoma in june. Had a 55gal drum setup down range and it took me a few shots to get on target. But by the end of the day i was gettin close to 50% hits.
When the shots stopped id start sending lead down range. It seemed like forever for the report of a hit. Had guys laughing beside us.

Ive tried 600yds but no luck. But fun!
Wind moves a 45 quite a bit at 600yds incase you were wondering.

Yes it sure is fun. I shoot long range probably more than short. It forces you to hold much steadier and that will really help tighten your short range groups and increase your speed.

I shot my dan wesson 44 at 50 yards and was hitting fairly accurately with it. 4" groups of 6 rounds fired. Not pinpoint but for a revolver shooting with iron sights I felt it was ok. My ruger Super blackhawk I tried at 100 but didn't have much luck. Think it was the ammo?

My alaskan doesn't like 50 yards with the ammo I was using. I think the (pattern) was about 2'. Lol
(Notice its the ammo? Not me! Yea that's right. Ha!)
Anxious to try my smith 586 at range to see how it does. My sp101 with 3" bbl does ok at 20 but that's as far as I've shot it.

Furthest I have shot is over 75 yards. Didnt measure the grouping ... But I can get 50% hits on a 1' square tin target, pretty regular.

Dan Wesson, 6" vent bull .. its even easier if I use .357 @ 1500 fps
