Reloading .40 price?

Equipment cost not included, your per round cost will go down. However, if you're like me, you shoot more and end up not saving any money. It's a worthwhile hobby though.

Post a Wanted ad here. You can get .40 brass pretty cheap. It used to be $35/1000.

I'm somewhere around 6 cents a round casting my own lead "boolits"

So far I've made about 2100 rounds on a Lee Pro 1000.

Be on the look out for a used Dillon press. Cliff sells .40 brass for 30/1000. I bought a 1k from him and nonnie is supposed to have me a few thousand and I went to the range last week and just so happens byram pd was qualifying so I picked up around a 1k pieces there. Go to your local ranges and pick it up. I reload for around .14 a round. You can buy it for .30 a round if you buy in bulk at gun shows or even order from some internet sights.

Good luck on finding the used Dillon. I've been looking for about a year now, but the only ones I find are almost the same price as new.

I got one about a month ago at a match at magnolia. paid 225 for a Dillon 550. I have since cleaned it up and loaded my first 1k. I now am contemplating getting a new barrel and casting my own bullets.

I think this has been answered pretty well, but for comparison:

I've got 40,000+ pieces of .40 brass, but I can still buy it for less than $30/1000 so I'll use that in the figures.
Primers are roughly $28/1000 (bought by the case of 5000)
Bulk 180 gr. FMJ bullets are $112/thousand (plated is a little cheaper, lead is cheapers still)
Powder is about $20/1000 (calculated using an expensive powder choice, but one I prefer).
That comes out to $.19 per round or just under half of what you are paying now.

Drop to lead bullets and cheaper powder, and it could be done for about $.13 per round. Of course if you had your own stockpile of brass, cast your own bullets, etc, it gets much cheaper. Similarly, if you wanted to load defensive-type bullets like Golden Sabers, XTP's, etc, the price would be significantly higher. The "premium" bullets cut down on savings a good bit.

My press setup is well over $1K, but it would take over $2K to duplicate it today if everything were new. Then it again, it fairly easily loads 1200 rounds or more an hour.
