Shooting Steel

Post by mascott on Sun Nov 20, 2011 1:37 pm

Is it relatively safe to shoot centerfire at a steel target at 100 yards, assuming using ar500 steel? Should the target hang certical or should it be at a skew?

No it's not the lapua, but I really don't know exactly without looking at the dies. Will try to get back to you on that. I'm mainly concerned about any ricochet.

PS: I neck down 338 Winchester magnum shells. It's on the order of the 338 norma magnum

a 338 win mag will blow through 1/2inch hardened steel at 300yards with the right bullet.. like a barnes solid copper.. best bet if you have access to the materials is build a cage to hold and tilt down the plate at maybe a 45 degree angle.. attach the plate using chains so it acts like a suspension.

Thanks. That's kind of what I thought. I was thinking I would need to tilt the plate to avoid a ricochet. I have some 1 " plate I guess I could use. Really trying to get it right the first time.

This is all a moot point. I just found out I have a36 steel plate. It's not hard enough and will crater no matter what I shoot at it. Thanks for the input although.

Keep an eye out for an old kid's swing set at garage sales. They can be had for next to nothing and make a nice frame to suspend steel targets from. You can use a couple pieces of wire or chain from the target to the back legs to angle backstop plates.
