If you want a rifle that you can spend more money and build on, buy a remington. If you want a very accurate rifle that you don't have to spend more money to achieve better accuracy, buy a Savage. I have a Savage FTR and a Savage BAS-K. Both are very, very accurate rifles capable of 1/4" MOA at 200 yards and possibly further. Both are sub MOA rifles at 600 yards. Remy cannot compete with that out of the box but with more dollars and more work, Remy is competetive.

Savage actions out number Remington actions at local and national fclass competitions 10 to 1. Of coarse the big boys will spend 1500 on others.

I shoot a Savage Model 12 /Brux

Savage has engineered the need to lap the lugs and a few other gunsmithing tasks out of the manufacturing process. (Floating bolt face)

Just had my barrel set back (Shortened by 1 inch, recha
mbered and recrowned) after 1800 rds. Caused issues at the state match. I thought I was shooting soeone else's gun (Reprinted from the F-Class excuse list #237)

Took it out this morning to shoot at 3 hundred yards.
Shot 3 shot Groups.

1 = FL Resize .7 inch Clean barrel
2 = Neck size .5 inch
3 = Neck size .37 inch

The last one is anomalous it usually hangs in around half an inch at 300 with 5 shot groups. I'm trying to extend my barrel life. Got another Brux ordered but it's gonna be about 8 more weeks.

I don't even know which part of a minute of angle this is.

I don't have the luxury of doing the one finger bolt cycling that Remington users seem to enjoy, Still, I think I'll opt for the luxuries described above.

If all I cared about was minute of deer accuracy all this would be academic. There is however nothing academic about it when your trying to split a 3 inch circle at 600 yards

ease of barrel change

Post by hawghound on Fri Nov 25, 2011 3:42 pm

It depends ... I have both. For the Savage, I have one action and four barrels. The ability to change out barrels without a lot of tools is handy... so for that reason Savage gets the thumps up. For me, changing the Remington barrel is a pain.

You can order the same barrels for a remington and add the same system as the savage if you wanted to go the barrel nut design.
