Am I the only one here who HATES fiberoptic sights???

Post by Brutus on Mon Nov 21, 2011 2:53 pm

I can't stand 'em.

Give me a regular old plain blade front sight, with or without bead, but take the day-glo sights and stick 'em where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned.

I've got a Remington 597 .22 rifle and a muzzleloader that both came with Williams FireSights and I absolutely despise them. They're OK in low light, but in regular sunlight they light up so bright that they get blurry and interfere with proper sight alignment and sight picture.

Are these things really THAT popular or are the manufacturers just putting them on as a useless doo-dad because they know that most folks are going to scope their rifles?

I like the long champion fiber optic sights on shotguns, great for squirrel and dove hunting, suitable for HD too. I had a 1911 with a fiber optic front And bomar rear, it was OK but I ended up wishing I had left the factory novaks on. Wouldn't put them on another pistol.

Fiber's arent' bullseye sights..they are designed for quick(er) target acquisition. If you are shooting for accuracy, black serrated sights cannot be beat, because you can get that crisp edge to edge sight picture. So I can relate. Shooting for accuracy, Fibers bother me, but they have their place for what they are designed for.

I think you probably aren't too far off though, fiber optics are a kind of whiz bang accessory I think manufacturers can tack on to try and enhance the look and the perceived value to potential consumers. Most of whom probably see fiber optics as an "upgrade" to standard black sights, and in some regards they are, but in others they are a step back.

Had em on a Glock 34 pistol I shot in USPSA...it was great on that.

Got some on a Home Defense Shotgun...no problems there either...but like someone said...They were on there for very fast target aquistion...and that's why I got em
