Are there any special tools needed to remove barrel from a remington 7400.

A barrel vise would definately help (as I am pretty sure the barrel is threaded and screwed to the action). I would also be careful not to torque the action to much , and possibly bend it. Consult a gunsmith first.

Yeah, I would talk to a gunsmith. Somewhere down the line they changed the threading from right handed to left. Was told that when I got a 742, the fella had blown the barrel up (think he was coming out of a stand with the muzzle facing downward). He sent it back to remington for them to do the work, just mentioned it in passing if I had trouble with the barrel.

When you take the forearm off there is a nut below the barrell on the front of the action. There is a special tool that fits this nut perfectly you can get from Midway or Brownells. An end wrench will fit on it if you are VERRRY careful not to bend your action bars and not strip the sides of the nut. You may have to modify the end wrench, JUST BE EASY with it. I would still suggest borrowing or buying the tool http://www.midwayusa.com/product/639030/menck-remington-barrel-nut-wrench-remington-742-4-7400.

Or if you like I will ship you mine to borrow if you like. I can also send you some copies of the breakdown instructions from my disassembly book. I can scan and email those.

Also use locktite upon reassembly.
