Question on 4473 Pin Number

Post by TankerHC on Fri Nov 25, 2011 10:28 pm

My stepfather bought a new pistol today at Academy in Beaumont and I asked him how long he was there. He told me not long because he has a card with a Pin number on it that he was issued that allows him to bypass filling out the 4473. All he does is show his card when purchasing, they call in the pin number and he's done. Anyone ever heard of this? I googled it but couldn't find anything about it. If true, I would like to get one of those cards.

The only way to bypass the 4473 is to have a firearms permit. And the number on that is the same as your DL. Even LEO and MIL have to do the background check unless they have a permit.

I correct myself, you don't bypass the 4473, you only bypass the call to the friendly FBI NICS operator. No matter what a 4473 is going to be filled out.

Sounds like a load of BS to me. From what I hear, Acadamy even does a NICS check on weapons permit holders. There's really no way around a 4473 unless you buy from an individual.

I used to get a hold every time. I never got denied just "Hold". I applied for a PIN and although ai still had to fill out the form and they still made the call the PIN got me approved every time. My FFL gave me the paprework and my PD did the fingerprint cards. Took about 8 weeks to get the PIN.

Edited to add...You don't get a card just a letter telling you the PIN and advising you take to show the FFL if purchasing a firearm.

I dont know, just know what he told me. Was just asking because if that were the case I would want one. I will be talking to him tonight and make sure I got it straight. I could be wrong but dont think so.

Even though if you have a MS CCW license and show it, some morons behind the counters
refuse to believe they don't still have to do a NICS check but that varies widely depending
on which store you're in. I've had it happen both ways in the same store and the clerk who
ought to have been selling shoes not guns even refused to believe their own manager when
I asked to speak to him and he confirmed the facts to the clerk. crying

One reason (of several) I don't go to top dollar pawn is they make the call on permit holders. Not that I have something to hide. Would just rather not have my info punched into their system everytime I buy something. To me its a perk not to have to wait while salesman calls in my info. They have their reasons but I have mine. This is how I understand the PIN system to work. There are folks out there with like names, places of birth, etc .... and some illegal with their SSN .... and they get placed on HOLD all the time. They apply for a PIN and the PIN is used to gain the appropriate approval. The PIN is just a unique identification code ...

There is a box for the UPIN # on the form but I have only had one person with one and they are a medical doctor who has worked internationally. Other than that I have never seen one, I can ask our local ATF guy next time he comes in.

bingo

the UPIN = unique personal identification number which is used for people who always get delayed for whatever reason.

Usually with a MS firearms permit, or from a state with reciprocity, a FBI NICS check is not required, but some places will check just to guard themselves. It doesnt hurt to do it, it only takes 2 more minutes, and the ATF appreciates how thorough the vendor is. Just be happy that in MS you get to do a background check and leave the store with the firearm in less than 30 minutes; you could be in a state with a wait of days instead of 30 minutes pull hair

Like the 5 day wait Romney instituted in Massachusetts, which he thought (Before he became an NRA member and 2nd Amendment Proponent, for political expediency) would be good for the whole country.
