1911 fever

Post by mildot on Sat Nov 26, 2011 8:50 pm

OK guys I've got the fever to purchase my first 1911 handgun. Would like to keep the cost around a $1000. There are just way too many to chose from. Need opinions and recommendations.

STI, Remington, some Kimbers can be found in the $700 range, especially right after Christmas.

For a first 1911 I suggest keeping it simple. Even a rock island armory, or high standard 1911s which run $400-500 are actually ideal starter 1911s.

You can find a good 1911 for $600-800. Save the $200-400 and stock up on GOOD magazines(I prefer Chip McCormick and Kim-pro tac-mags) and lots of ammo.

In that price range the Springfield Range Officer or TRP and the STI Trojan are probably the best deals going.

Some Kimbers can be had for less than 1k last time I checked. I never had a problem with any that I have shot.

rock island armory has good/basic 1911's around 400-500 bucks. I traded mine for a springfield armory compact, and wish i would have kept the rock.its a good gun you can always dress it up.

Last year right after Christmas the Outfitter in Florence/Richland was selling the bottom of the line Custom(their name for a 5" gun) for $600!!! I will kick myself until the day I die for not buying it!

I have a Kimber Custom II and if I had it to do over again I'd go with the Springfield RO. The Kimber is reliable and accurate, but I really think Springfield constructs their pistols better. You can tell just holding it. Plus I'm just appalled that Kimber puts a plastic mainspring housing in their "cheaper" pistols. I just think you get more for your money with SA and STI.

Para Ordnance's are nice - you can chose between standard and hi-cap. Remington has a couple of 1911's. And don't forget S&W versions - but they are pricey.

Whoa! Plastic in a gun!?!? What in the world were they thinking!?!?

Personally I'd rather have a plastic/nylon mainspring housing than I would "made in brazil" stamped on the gun like most SAs.

Gotta agree with the STI suggestions though

As you can tell, this is a passionate topic. Love the Springfields but I wanted American made. Paid $599 for a new Kimber Custom II in September of last year. Few months later I paid under $500 for a used Ultra Carry. Go fondle a few and find what is important to you in terms of options - hard to go wrong with any current offerings.

If I could do it again I would have bought a Colt or low end Dan Wesson.
