tip on fixing up a garand.

if you really want to make your garand look cool, go to any hobby store and pick up a WHITE GREASE PENCIL. use it to fill in the numbers and letters stamped on your rifle. then wipe away anything not in the stamping. don't put it on too heavy as that will add some white shadows to the non-stramped area. here is my garand after doing this:

I did the same thing to my M1A only I used a bit of white crayon I borrowed from my son.

Worked great.

Yep - the white China Marker -or- white crayon works pretty well. With some of the old Winchesters it does not take very well due to the light strike of the impressions .... I think the rear sights look really cool done this way and it also helps in making adjustments.

Brownell's has a lacquer stick for this.

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=7778/Product/LACQUER-STIK-reg-#

Hi-Lights Engraving, Stamped #'s And Names

Highly specialized compound wipes on to bring out stamped or engraved impressions on ALL smooth surfaces. Ideal for guns, parts, accessories. Semi-solid in stick form when used, but soon hardens and becomes permanent.

I got all three from Brownell's I'll have to take a pic of my AR and my Glock that I did with that stuff. I used the white on the serial number, red on the safety, and gold for the trademark.

I have seen that before -- my problem is the PERMANENT feature ...

Lacquer thinner and a toothbrush is supposed to remove it.

Some use Testors enamel model paint.

Some folks used to use liquid paper.

I just applied the white china marker to my SA Inc Garand with light stampings and remembered a tip: Heat the area with a hairdryer or heat gun to let the china marker soften and fill the voids. If anyone has info on the NM stamp please let me know. The rifle was bought new and had no NM parts other than an unstamped 6 groove barrel.

I've been using red and white china markers for a while. I'll try heating the metal on the next one. Here's a couple of examples.
