Thoughts on 40 S&W

Post by mark_k on Mon Nov 28, 2011 1:12 pm

Hello, I was wondering what yalls thoughts on 40 S&W handguns? A guy is wanting to sell me one one, but never owned one. Mostly shoot 45 9 and 5.7. Thanks. It is a Glock by the way.

Alot of people really like them. I am not a fan because I prefer the recoil of the .45, which is not as snappy to me. I do believe it is an excellent defensive hnadgun round though.

Yea, the ballistics are great, but you just need to shoot one and see if you like the way it reacts.

Its a great cartridge and ammo is readily availble everywhere. Snappy recoil, but it is a cut down 10mm and it is better than a 9 IMO. Trying one is the best answer though just like posted above.

Most see it as the best compromise between a .45 and a 9mm. Good power, higher capacity.

I like .40sw, but I'm honestly getting away from it......I feel just as good toting a 9mm with a couple more round or a .45 with quite a few less rounds.....but that's me...I know I'm no help

It's snappy but hell thats what makes em fun!!! thumbs up That being said I just offed mine due to caliber consolidation and it was the only one in the heard so she got the axe.........Going to .45 and 9mm as primarys.......You will like it and it is a hell of a good defensive round.....

Own 3 of them -- S&W, Glock, and Beretta ..... hardly ever leave the safe ... Yea, I consider it a good round, however, like the capacity of the 9mm and the power factor of the .45acp.

Go shoot one and see how you like it .... many folks swear by it and I believe the round is here to stay ...

Yeah, I've always had that thought of it being a round for people that couldnt decide on a 9 or 45. More than likely this one wouldnt be for cc, so defensiveness ability isn't all that important. Thanks for all yalls help.

It's a very popular round w/ military and LE so once fired brass can usually be found for decent prices if you reload. Of course reloading can also fix a lot of "snappiness" issues too.

It was made from neutered 10mm ammo because many in the FBI couldn't handle the 10mm full power. After they neutered it someone figured out the case could be shortened to fit a 9mm frame and the 40 S&W (40 short & weak to 10mm fans) was born.

Glocks have a chamber support issue with 40 S&W, some have gone kaboom. Do your own research but I'd buy an aftermarket barrel that fully supports the round if I went Glock.

. My thoughts exactly. I bought a glock 23, shoulda. Bought a 19. I've never taken my wolfe 40 to 9 barrel out of it.

I've got two in that caliber....just because I wanted them. My sub compact XD40 is certainly snappy, but my P226 40 feels about the same as my P226 9mm.

Thought about buyin the conversion for my XDm but never could convince myself that it wouldn't be just as easy to buy an all new gun haha. I'd get tired of converting after a while.

@mark_k, most folks do it for a variety of reasons:
Ammo cost for 9mm is cheaper to practice with
Softer recoil for practice purposes
And some do it just because they can....

Personally if I buy an aftermarket barrel it's going to be because the factory barrel is shot, or because I'm ready to buy a suppressor and need a threaded barrel. Because SOMETIMES if you change caliber barrels you also have to change recoil springs and mags, no biggie but it can get costly and aggravating to keep up with

The Lone Wolf I had for my G22 didn't need anything additional, other than 9mm mags, and it was bulletproof. Shot just as well as the factory .40 barrel did, with a lot less recoil and expense. Never had the first glitch.

Because i can slap steel a lot better with 9mm, and I've watched Hickok45 too much on youtube ha. my main reasons were recoil/more fun to shoot//cheaper. My intentions were to drop the 40 barrel back in when I was through playing, but I shoot it so, much I never do! lol

I prefer either the 9mm or .45. Owned a few .40's and carry one daily at work. Dont care for the recoil impulse. Some may disagree but I dont think the . 40 is as accurate as either the 9mm or .45 with all things being equal.

Maybe I'm different but I don't consider .40 s&w's recoil to be "snappy". I have a few .40's and I like the round except for it being more expensive. And I've shot a couple thousand rounds through by Glock 23 and never had a kaboom or any issue out of it. All of my recent purchases have been 9mm because of the price difference in the round.

Yea, I also disagree. In fact, it's my opinion that the .40 is a little more accurate up to longer distances than the .45. Then again, I don't currently own a .45 so I haven't shot it near as much as 9mm or .40
