45-70 Loads

Post by cwink on Mon Nov 28, 2011 2:39 pm

Anyone got any good 45-70 loads? I picked up a bunch of reloading equipment from my uncle and one of the items is a die set for 45-70. Thinking about getting a barrel for either my Contender or Encore just for kicks (already have a 358 Win barrell).

70 grs. of Goex Cartridge Grade, .030 fiber wad and a 535 gr. Postell bullet is a good one. My smokeless load with that same bullet wouldn't be pleasant out of that little, light Contender. Wink

Ok that bing said let me appologize for running late to this topic!!!!!!

quite a few (cast) (copper) an (jacketed) loads surfacing around for the GREAT 45/70

Here are some i shoot but mine are over stated max so proceed with caution

14gr. unique 405 gr lfn
30.2gr imr4227 405 gr lfn shoots about the same as above unique load
52.0 gr n120 300gr barnes tsx
52.5gr H4198 300gr barnes tsx
52.5gr H4198 325gr hornady ftx have shot this to 54.0gr h4198 but its a lil bit to hot (just sayin)
40.0 gr imr 4227 525gr RNFMJ i have loaded this but dont suggest it (shot only in 13lb sharps) contender would kick your teeth out!

All these above have proven to be safley shot in my guns proceed with caution
work up to these carefully !

drew.... do you have any loads using IMR 4227 with a 350gr or 405gr jacketed bullet? I recently bought a bunch of IMR 4227 at a good price, but mainly for magnum revolvers and Carbine ammo. I would like to try IMR 4227 in 45-70............

I am having a hard time finding any bullets for reloading.. The ones I have found are as much as a box of ammo.

Sub Gun

Lee loading manual states the following for a 405gr bullet
starting load 27.9 gr - 30.0 gr max with a 26,500 CUP 2.550 OAL

This is a modern gun load i have shot it in my sharps an shoots fine IMHO i would start at 33.5 -35.0 for a 350gr load

what kind of gun are we talking sub gun (trapdoor lever action modern gun or ruger ) all are specked different

Course I'm not drew but I'm seeing some data with that powder in one of my books using a 300 gr. and 350 gr. bullet SubGun. (Modern Rifles)

300 gr. - IMR4227___36.0 grs.___1722fps______39.0 grs.___1919fps.

350 gr. - IMR4227___31.0 grs.___1504fps______34.0 grs.___1658fps.

Hope this helps. Wink

Thanks guys for the IMR 4227 loads. I went and looked in my LEE book and found the 405gr loads as mentioned. I will be shooting these loads in modern guns.

Drew mines a falling block. The blackpowder load I mentioned above is about all I load anymore...have tried several different powders and several different cast bullets and it's what I settled on. I'll PM you my smokeless load using the 535 gr. Postell bullet and the 500 gr. Barnes TSX. Wink

The ammo I have loaded up here at the house would only last 2 minutes with that thing. Shocked But it would be fun. Very Happy Sandy Hook project sounds familiar. Have a link?

But did y'all see...... it transfer as any other rifle! That's amazing! And at 800 rounds a minute of 45/70, you could mess some stuff up. If only I were rich instead of sooo purty.
