Range Time w/ My Brother
Spent most of Wednesday at Magnolia w/ my brother. Mentioned in another post that I'd picked up a Marlin Model 60 and a Savage GXP. Scoped them both, l'il bro sighted them in and then we tested ammo. Here's the rub - brother shooting the Savage, me the Mod 60 and in almost every case it grouped tighter than the Savage bolt action. Now, before you get me wrong, my brother is a one-hole shooter on a bad day so the fact that I had tighter groups with a semi-auto is mind-boggling to say the least.
And then - spent a little time killing paper w/ my new MN Mod 44 and Mod 38. Dang, they are loud, but a helluva lot of fun to shoot. The Mod 38 grouped tighter than the Mod 44 and didn't "kick" as much - much fun. Then, after all that, pulled out the Hi-Point 9mm carbine and started blasting away. Picked one up after the previous thread on the carbine, mounted a Red-Dot type sight on it and boy what a lot of fun to shoot.

Was good to see you there the other day and great meeting your brother.
These two guys love their NMs ...... I could not put that many rounds down range without leaving with a sore shoulder!!

That savage must not have liked the ammo it was being fed. If i do my part mines very accurate with cci standard velocity.
I too have heard that m38s dont kick like the m44 does. I have not really shot my 91/59(really close to a m38). My cut down 91/30 though is definitely not as bad as my m44 is, you would think the heavier gun would be milder. The m44 is easily 2 pounds heavier than the cut down gun is.

Nice getting to visit w/ you again as well, Capt. Shoulda come over to the benches and grabbed one of those puppies to throw a little lead down range. Did I mention we didn't start playing with them until after we ran a bunch of shells through my 870 Express Magnum? Maybe the shoulders were just a little "deadened!"
RW - I agree that the Savage bolt should outshoot the Marlin semi and probably will when I find ammo it "really" likes - still testing. On a side note, when the Marlin outshot the Savage we were testing ammo - 11 different brands/varieties and we each shot the same ammo at the same time.

Maybe the savage needs a "break in" period?

My marlin 17hmr shoots about 1/2" groups at 100 with most ammo I've used. Have been told after 500 rounds or so those groups will shrink considerably. Heck if they get any smaller I'm gonna have to change the scope cause I'll think I'm missing!

Joe - I think you're probably right on this. I'm going down to Magnolia and put a 150 or or so rounds of lead .22 through it and see if that tightens it up at all. Heck, I've got a ton of cheap azz .22 and may run it all through it
By the way, also nice to meet you and shake your hand last week at Bass Pro - you won't remember me as you we're really busy at the time! And if I recall, the customer you we're helping wasn't all that bad looking. Gals and guns - what more could you ask for?
Merry Christmas All and God Bless -

Aw, a man with a steel trap mind and unfortunately mine is rusted shut! As far as that gal you were helping - I think (rust is not a nice thing) she was buying a scope and you were fixin' to mount it (the scope
