Traditions Tip-up 45-70 (PICS ADDED)

Post by USMCRIDER on Tue 29 Nov 2011 - 14:07

Decided to go pick up a 45-70 last night and ended up at Academy. I decided on this Traditions with the thumb hole stock. Anybody have any experience with this brand? Academy didn't have the scope base and rings (don't have time to order before this weekend) so I'll be heading to Dad's Super Pawn to get the Weaver mount and rings instead of the ones Traditions makes. What's ya'lls' opinions on the Weaver mounts?

Update: Dad's Super Pawn did not have anything to fit my rifle after assuring me on the phone they did. So I drive an hour through heavy traffic over there to make it before they closed just to be told they didn't have anything to fit. So since I'm over there in Gulfport I return to Academy because they did have a mount
that came in a combo pack with a cheap looking scope so I figured I would just buy it just for the mount and rings. The day I bought the rifle, the guy that sold it to me said it would fit. I'll be daggum if it wouldn't fit either. So I look on the gun shelf and half of the .45-70's and other single shots have the rail mounts already on them so I asked about exchanging for one that they DO have everything for. The guy looks at me like I'm asking him to give up his first born and says "What do you mean exchange it?" After that awkward moment he informs me that Academy has a NO EXCHANGE OR RETURN POLICY ON FIREARMS. He even acted like it was kind of a "GOTCHA" moment and was smiling. (Note: I will never buy another firearm from Academy) So now I have a .45-70 that I can't find a scope mount for. Anybody have any suggestions on where to go down here on the coast for some help?

That sucks ... when will these places learn they need someone who actually KNOWS something to work the gun counter. Sorry, can't help you with the proper rings, etc.

Do you know Ed Sampson in Wade? His Son Ricky owned the Last Stop gas station on 63 just before the George County line. I believe Ed did gunsmithing. He may can help you with a mount. If not. I work at the JC campus in Gautier. Maybe if you bring the barrel only and a weaver style base the machine shop can drill the holes needed to fit your barrel?

Thanks Fastarrow, My next step was going to get a weaver mount and have someone modify it for me. I looked up Traditions dealers and turns out Bass Pro is a Traditions dealer.(Should have done this in the first place) Called traditions and got a model number for the mount that would fit my Rifle. Bass Pro in Spanish Fort has two of them left so I'm going to take off early and head over there in a few.

They didn't tell me up front. I had no idea till I went back and this problem came up. When I called this morning to get the corporate number, the guy on the phone asked me if there was anything he could do. When I told him the situation, he told me that it was written in the folder of stuff they gave me......................... Well THEY DON'T GIVE YOU THAT TILL AFTER THE PURCHASE!!!! I told him that information would have been helpful BEFORE the purchase. I didn't see so much as a business card posted let alone a sign stating it at the counter.

I can understand reasons for having a policy like this, but 2 days after purchase on an unfired weapon. Something should be able to be worked out. I only wanted to exchange it, not a refund. Oh well, we learn from our mistakes. If you want a scope on your rifle and it's not common parts, make sure you have it before you purchase!

And now we know, AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!

I hate to say it, but this is exactly what we, the consumers, have asked for. We want to be able to walk into a store and pay rock bottom prices. What happens when a big store has to operate that way? They refuse a lot of returns and hire the cheapest people they can find. We get our cheap stuff, they get their profit.

Most of us are guilty of it, me more than most. I'm slowly changing my way of thinking on the subject, though.

Thanks Stryker, I called traditions and got the info for this same mount. They said they didn't have any stocked and could be about a week before they would have them. I never could find it on their website. I called all over the Gulf Coast yesterday looking for it. Bass Pro Shop over in Spanish Fort had two of them left. I took off work early, went over there and got it mounted and bore sighted and even had time to put holes in paper before it got dark.

Update on the Academy situation: I have to give some kudos since I lightly bad mouthed them. I called the Gulfport Academy yesterday to get the corporate number and they asked if they could attempt to help me with my problem first. The manager was a good dude and called the district manager and got approval for me to come back and exchange the rifle in the event that I could not find a mount. A little egg on my face for stressing out that I wouldn't have my rifle ready for this weekend.

All in all everything is good now and the rifle fires beautifully. I'll get some pictures up soon.

I called Cooks and they didn't have them, but he said I could bring it over there and he maybe could modify an exsisting one. That was going to be the next step had I not found one. The person I talked to was very friendly and eager to help. Not the case with most of the gun shops I called!

I bought this gun 2 yrs ago and absolutely love it. I now use it all season long. Had a problem with the firing pin at first, but traditions fixed it well in time for opening day. Some ammo would misfire. I have found that Hornady ballistic tip works best. A few things you will learn about this rifle: its accurate, it packs a punch, and finding your deer is easy. If the deer isn't laying right where you shot it, it won't be far and there will be a significant trail leading to it. Let me know if you have any other questions about it.
