If they are getting unemployment benefits that means they are unemployed by no fault of their own, but Georgia will do this while letting welfare recipients sit around and collect.

I've always thought this would be an excellent idea for anyone on the govt dole, including myself. Unfortunately, the system prevents me from doing anything meaningful. I've asked several times and was always told that I'm either totally disabled or not, period, end of discussion. I do try to pay back society any time I get the opportunity, though. I've mowed and raked my neighbors' yards for free for years and always try to lend a hand any time I see someone who needs help. I've repaired several hundred computers over the years and have yet to accept a dime in gratitude. Do the same with lawnmowers and any other equipment I have the ability to work on. While I'd be the first to admit that as a group we are a pretty sorry bunch, some of us do care and do appreciate the rest of you who work your butts off to cover our little subsistance checks. Believe it or not, most of us do carry a certain amount of guilt around with us, even though matters are pretty much out of our hands. Anyways, I do think this is an excellent idea and hope it catches on everywhere. Us folks on the dole could use a little human dignity and this might just be an avenue that would help us feel better about ourselves while helping society in general.

There are three problems with this. First, this isnt "Volunteering". When the government says you HAVE to volunteer, thats forced labor. Second, people collecting unemployment do for a reason, they were let go from job for reason not their own. And finally, why should someone who has worked, paid in their share to unemployment, who should be out looking for a job (NOT being forced into involuntary servitude), have to do so when millions of welfare recipients sit on their fat azzes with 10 kids doing nothing but collecting food stamps and a check and getting free health care through Medicaid? BTW, Im 100% disabled as well, due primarily to injuries received through my years in the military. I dont carry any guilt. I worked for 35 years, steadily, no one is giving me anything.

Sorry, I read the article wrong and agree with what you've said. An unemployed person should be free to spend all of their time seeking gainful employment. I was thinking they were speaking of everyone on the govt dole and I do feel that some should be required to do something to benefit their communities. Two entirely different matters here, though.

I live in Georgia, and have met senator Chip Rodgers. He usually is a very fair minded constitutional guy, but in this case I don't agree with him. My wife was unemployed for six months without collecting unemployment benifits. She worked he buut off to find a job and it takes many hours a day to actually look for a job. There is no way that a person actively seeking employment has time to volunteer for 24 hours of service. To much big government in this proposal!!!!
