Looking at buying an AR15 (UPDATE! Weapon purchased!)

Post by fastarrow on Thu Dec 01, 2011 8:46 am

I'm in the market for an AR15 .223
I have looked at so many diffetent brands my brain hurts! I have narrowed it down to 3 hundred. thumbs up
Seriously I am looking at 3 brands.

S&W M&P $750
DPMS $699
WHINDOM WEAPONRY supposed to be the founder of Bushmaster $850

I like the fit and feel of the WW. But not alot of info on this one. It has a removable carry handle.
The S&W is nice also but I hear good and bad on this one.
The DPMS has a good following. But the upper & lower fit on this weapon doesn't apeal to me. May not be a problem but just doesn't look right.
What would be my best bet.

I "built" my first one, with alot of help from BeauBeaux. I assembled the lower on my own, then he assembled the upper. I learned alot about how they work by doing it this way. I don't know if I really saved any money or not. I would recommend at least putting together your own lower and then purchasing the uper you want.

Short of that, I believe DPMS is a good name. What will you use the rifle for?

Mainly just a range gun. But I may hunt some with it this year. The DPMS has a gap at the radius in the rear where the upper/lower meet. You could almost slide a business card through it. it sits almost flush everywhere else. You can torque it a little and the gap closes.
Don't know if this is a problem or not. But the other AR's I looked at don't seem to have this problem. I may be just looking for a snake. But it just doesnt look appealing to me.

If you don't like it, DON'T BUY IT!

If you want to hunt, you may look at calibers other than .223. 6.8PSC or 6.5 Grendel would make good deer rifles I think. 300 Blackout would be another good one for the AR-15 platform. The 300 Blackout seems to be gaining the most traction with commercial sales right now.

Yeah. I think i'll pass on the DPMS. The more I think on it the more I don't want it.
I have a buddy that has a upper in .30AR that I can get for hunting if i'm willing to part with a certain handgun he wants. And I have about 1000 rounds of .223 from owning an AR for a short time before.

I agree with jpdmidas; get the one that you like/that fits the task. For putting holes in paper, in particular at HP matches, the Rock River National Match ARs are hard to beat for an out-of-the-box match rifle. But way too heavy to carry around hiking/hunting varmints. Ex.: this a.m. I went out the door after coyotes in the yard with a Bushmaster M4. Light, very accurate out to 300, and much handier than grabbing the full-length heavy match AR. As for the coyotes: they went over the hill before I could get a decent sight picture. Mad

Just got back from looking at the S&W M&P again. No forward assist & no dust cover. Didn't notice they were missing before. So that one is out.

I think I may go with building my own. That way I get what I want and not have the extra cost of ordering more parts or pieces laying around.
Thanks Guys! My wife will appreciate yalls input. evil gun thumbs up

Try this if you're looking for an inexpensive rifle: http://palmettostatearmory.com/9007.php

Or, if you can spend more, get this Colt: http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=6920

I'm not a fan of any of the brands you mentioned.

I am very happy with my M&P15. I have the Sport, which is the one you describe without the dust cover or forward assist...I haven't missed those features at all...to me, it's not a big deal.

BTW, the pre-tax price for the Sport should be more in the neighborhood of $600...at least that's what I paid for mine.

Good luck with your search.

I have RRA - DPMS - BM - BM/EA, the DPMS is a custom built 308 shoots ¼MOA and or bullet hole if I do my part @ 100yds, out shots all the little bolt guns around me. Had the BM the longest been shot to death still go's boom, the RRA seems to come alittle more decked out from factory, my calibers or 458 - 308 & 223. You probably can't go wrong with any of them being built today things just get better kinda like autos.

O.K.
Against my better judgement. And choking from eating crow. I purchased a Windham Weaponry AR15 model: SRC last night from Academy Sports in Gulfport. I'm not second guessing the weapon. Just hated buying it from Academy. But it was more of the style of AR I was looking for. And $100 cheaper than the model I would have settled on. I would have spent the extra $ if my local shop would have ordered this model for me. But he said he wanted to sell the ones he had before ordering something else. pull hair

I know I need pictures! Hope to have them up tommorow.
And I was surprised with the service I received at Academy. All the DUMB A$$'s must have been off.
