FAL's question
I had a old izzy FAL back in the day that i got and sold for a good price but am thinking about stepping back into the battle rifles.. what makes/things should one stay away from when looking for a good FAL?
Re: FAL's question
Generally anything from Century is a crap shoot. Not all are bad, but most have some issues. Anything from Hesse is crap and should be avoided. Coonan, Imbel, and DSA receivers are good to go. Most of the Enterprise receivers are good. In my opinion, the STG's are the gold standard for FAL rifles, especially the barrels. The kit market has just about dried up, with a good condition IMBEL kit going for 500.00 or so and the Heavy Barrel Izzy kits around 900.00 or so. As far as I know, the DSA receiver is the only one that is forged, the rest are cast. It seems to make no difference. Metrics are easier to get parts and magazines for. If you have any specific questions, let me know.
Re: FAL's question
I have a Heavy Barrel on a Dan Coonan Receiver that has an air gauged barrel..It is accurate as heck, but a pain to carry. At least it has a purse handle. If you ever decide to build one up, give me a shout.
Re: FAL's question
I got one I've had for years that a good friend built for me. Almost sold it a while back needing cash for school, etc. Am glad I didn't now. Think I am in the clear and shouldn't be faced with that decision again!! He is very knowledgeable and thorough. Knows them inside and out. His initials are FASTBACK65.

Re: FAL's question
Not all Hesse FALs are crap, but they do have a bad rep. I have a Hesse FAL that shoots great. Granted it might have been worked over by someone after it left Hesse, but it shoots with NO problems.
I agree that all Century Arms kit gun are HIT or MISS...... The same for Hesse.
I would go with a DSA FAL.

Re: FAL's question
Armscorp receivers are quality. Subgunfan, the issue with Hesse receivers, is the QC. They have major fitting issues if you are building your own. A competent builder can get a hesse to run good but I can almost guarantee, it will not go together easy. A DSA or imbel or Coonan will go together without a hitch. Most Entreprise receivers will as well. I have never built on an Armscorp, I believe they mostly came on completed rifles. Armscorp does make a type 2 T48 clone receiver that is real nice. There is also a Santa Barbara receiver that is golden. I have only seen a couple of FN Herstal receivers come up for sale but obviously they are good to build on. I meant no disrespect on your Hesse. If they run they run, but they are not for the casual builder. One more to stay away from is Ohio Rapid Fire. Todd built a lot of out of spec receivers and they were all sold without the ejector block installed and with the specs being off, the blocks were very hard to fit.
Re: FAL's question
No disrespect taken.....
I didn't build my Hesse FAL, so I don't know of the build problems. I understand you are a FAL guru, so I believe you.
