Type 38 Arisaka with Mum, Value?
I am thinking of selling my Type 38 Arisaka. I dont know the value of it. It is a 190000 Series, Has the Mum. Some pitting on the rear of the barrel. This Definatley seen battle. The first time i was cleaned We pulled "Beach Sand" out of it, It was brought home and set in the closet since. Ill try to get some pics up. Any Rough Estimates?

Well, it was taken out of military service and used as a training rifle for a Japanese school (those circles through the "mum" as well as the stock brands indicate this). Value? Not alot I'm afraid... There are quite a few Type 38s in the country and the school marked ones are not very sought after. A standard Type 38 with an intact Mum runs about $300 these days (several hundred more if matching numbers and accessories), and if the mum is gone or canceled out with those school markings, you can cut the value in half.

What condition is the bore?

I had one with the Commie Star. I believe the ideographs are Chinese. Many Type 38 rifles were given as gifts to North Korea in the late 1940's. If I am correct the ideographs on the stock say a gift from the people's republic of China.
Look into this further, it might make the rifle a lot more desireable.

I've passed the photo to my "translator". Not sure if it is that simple...we'll see!

Left one means to teach. Can't make out the right one. Can you take a better photo?

Well, it wasn't that simple...I'm told the symbol was "too ancient!" Sorry.

I did get a follow-on email, just confirming what PhilipM said about "to teach". It does mean something like "learn" or "teach."
