NFA item holders - How do you carry your paperwork ?
Well 5 days shy of 6 months I finally get my approved form 4.
I went the NFA Trust route.
I keep all my original paperwork in a binder...Trust, approved form 4, all correspondence etc etc.
I know I'm suppose to have my paperwork with me any time the item is with me.
In a way I kinda don't like carrying around the originals in case they were stolen or more likely lost....I can just imagine the hassle it would be to get a replacement form 4 and tax stamp
No way I wanna go there.
Anyway - to remain perfectly legal in the eyes of the law ATF or any law enforcement that may question me, My question is
Is a photocopy of the originals to carry around sufficient ?
What do ya'll do ?
Thanks for input

Yes, just photocopy the original and keep the original in a safe place.

I just carry a stack of photocopies of the forms and stamps with me to reduce the hassle of anyone who thinks they're illegal and "wants to see my license".
Now, granted I haven't brought a machinegun to a big range or event but the time I've been asked to show any paperwork for SBRs, machine guns, and silencers still sits at 0.

I don't have any NFA items......YET! But I've always seen here and other forums that copies are sufficient. I've even read of some people shrinking the copies a bit? I guess to fit 2 copies on one sheet of paper, thus cutting the amount of crap you have to carry in half. the theory is sound. as long as its legible then i see no problem

I have owned FAs since 1981. Been to many shoots (gotten the Form 5320.20 for those that were out of state). Even talked to and showed my SMGs to LEOs not at the shoots a few times. My counter for LEO asking for the paperwork also stands at "0". Not to say there are not the "Barneys" out there that wouldn't know what a Form 4 was if it bit them on the butt.
But YES, ALWAYS have a copy with you just in case. It might take Barney's CO to straighten things out............
BTW: No Form 5320.20 is required for in-state travel.

I guess there's a way to ask ATF to send you some certified "copies" of your Form 4....for a fee of course ?

I keep my original forms and trust in a safe and carry copies in a brief case in my vehicle. If one of my trust members uses a device, thay have a copy of the forms and a trust with them also. This was deemed sufficient by a person that answered the phone at the BATF some time ago.
I have had a state form declined as insufficent in the past, when it had been "shrunk down", account of being deemed an "altered form". I have not shrunk any of my form 4's or the trust though.

captain-03 got the cuffs put on him in Ridgeland with paperwork years ago. Funny story now, then probably not so much.

Yeah I heard Cap tell that story on a recent "road trip"....it was a cluster I bet for a while...
Big Brother don't play nice
My question on how to get "certified copies" of your Form 4 from ATF still stands....anyone got a link or something that tells me how to get em. Think they are a 1$ a piece but I'm sure you gotta fill out some form...

I would do a little research into who if anyone you need to prove ownership or show papers to before I did much worrying about this subject.

Re: NFA item holders - How do you carry your paperwork ?
I made copies of all mine, two copies. Put them all in a large ziploc bag. So I have two bags with all my forms in them. I put the originals back in the safe in my 'important papers' box. Anytime I take any of mine out to play I simply grab one of the ziploc bags. That way I know I have a copy for any of them I take out.
Quite honestly, most LE are not going to know if the paperwork is in order, correct etc. But if I hand them a bag full of forms, pretty sure they will feel good about me having my $hlt in order for whichever one they are in question of.

I make copies (originals keep in safe) and carry in the box I carry my machine gun in, in a simple folder. Also make sure you go to the atf site and fill out the forms to cross state lines with your stuff. good to get that out of the way ahead of time.

Re: NFA item holders - How do you carry your paperwork ?
Way back when I had a bunch of toys. I carried a ring binder note book with photo copies of the all of my form 4's, FFL and the number to the sheriff who signed for all my toys. Went back and fourth to Knob Creek a few times and never once was asked by anyone to see my paperwork.
PS
I hear stamp collectors will pay a premium for a "used"tax stamp if you ever decide to sell.

Keep a couple copies in my gunpack with the nfa and one with the ammo, doesnot hurt to have a spare in the glove box. I usually fold them and slip in a gallon ziplock bag since burnt powder and gun cleaners and such arenot paper friendly and the plastic bag is somewhat resistant.
