Post by Beladran on Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:22 am

so while back i got a bunch of these M2 pulled 30cal bullets they have a bi metal jacket that will attract a magnet.. should i treat these as AP rounds when im shooting steel plates? Will they effect steel any more than a standard copper jacket?

They shouldn't if they aren't AP with the penetrator. You most likely have "M2 alt", alt = alternative, a bullet with a mild steel jacket plated with guilding metal.

The CMP says on their website something to the effect that "all bullets will attract a magnet" to some degree based on the content of the alloy used in the jacket material. This doesn't necessarily indicate a steel core. I had a guy try to sell me M48 marked(original packaging sealed) EG 7.62x39mm as "AP" because it attracts a magnet. I have the original German spec sheets on this stuff, it's lead core. But his magnet told him otherwise

The mild steel core (ie: M855 in 5.56mm) and the bi-metal jacket ammo should do no more damage than lead core ammo on steel plates.
