what 308 is this?
I bought a metric butt-ton of this and it wont shoot in my DSA FAL, my M1A or my FN SPR A3G Bolt gun.
The primer is dented to the point where any other round will fire, but no bang. If I rechamber a once fired round it will fire after the second primer strike.
Its brass cased and annealed. Full metal Jacket. The bullet attracts a magnet.
I tried to get a pic of the headstamp but the camera wouldnt grab it.
The headstamp says "308W" on top. "82" on bottom. There is a "O" on the left and right of the primer between the upper and lower headstamps.
Heres a pic of the box they're in:

Sellier & Bellot, could be corrosive, maybe not, S&B can't even tell you.

Knew 7.62x51 (mil-spec) has thicker case walls...higher pressure, that nasty crimped primer and possibly a harder primer.
I think the general rule is
You can safely shoot 308 Winchester in barrels marked 7.62x51 nato but not necessarily the other way around.
Its why I've always avoided the "deal" bulk milsurp 7.62 nato ammo...It aint no "deal" if'en it don't shoot
I'd say your problem is with primers on this one...just guessing
Good Luck with it

What reloader said. It is Czech. Have you dropped a round into a ctg headspace guage? The ammo may be too short in headspace. When buying surplus ammo we must realize that when the Country still uses the caliber we are buying, they are going to sell us the worst lots first. You get the junk they don't want.
There are some exceptions:
1. Swedish made 7.62x51 026 or 26 heasdtamp the most accurate NATO Ball I have ever fired
2. German MEN headstamped 7.62x51
3. FNM 7.62x51
4. British Radway Green 7.62x51 or 5.56x47

Sorry to hijack this, but is .308 / 7.62X51 not a direct cross over. along the same lanes as the 5.56 / .223?

PhillipM, thats the same stuff with the exception of the 83 being 82 on mine. Thanks for the pic.
So it is S&B Czech? We all agree on this?

I've read a lot and discussed this at length with numerous folks and the best I can determine is that full-house .308 is hotter than 7.62 NATO. That doesn't necessarily mean that all commercially-available .308 is hotter than 7.62, just that the SAAMI specs for max .308 loads are hotter than 7.62 standards.
The small ring, two lug bolt 1916 Spanish Mauser and Spanish FR-7 (modified 1916) were the start of this debate. (As opposed to the large ring, three lug bolt of the 1898 Mauser action.) I've got a 1916 and it's marked "308 WIN" on the underside of the barrel along with the import markings. However, it is said that 7.62 NATO is safe for these rifles, but .308 commercial is not.
