AR Optics ?

Post by vern3 on Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:11 pm

Checking to see if anyone has used a Acog on their AR, if so pros and cons and which model?

Can't decide if I want to try and Acog or maybe a 1.5 x 5 scope

Any help would be appreciated and you can pm me if you want

Thanks in advance.

I've got a trijicon reflex on mine. Not an acog but same concept, which is the only reason I mention it. I love it! It's solid as a rock to say the least! I tell everyone it's like the light of God in the daylight

Not sure about the acog but my reflex is pretty hefty, but not ridiculously so. And trijicon has been more than helpful when I've had questions. My only regret is that I had a nicer AR to pair it with

I used one for a year in Iraq. It's a great optic, very durable and no electronics to go out. The downside is the price, magnification makes it difficult to use in CQB and you can't co-witness BUIS.

I can co-witness my eotech with BUIS on a slick top rifle. Not in the class of a ACOG but you got to get buy with what you can.

For the longest time I thought that ACOGs were jacks of all trades, masters of none, but then I bought a TA11 on a whim and was surprised at how much I liked it. In fact, several months ago I sold the gun that it goes on, but I still haven't sold the ACOG - I've been rotating it with an Aimpoint Micro on another AR. At the range, I almost always use the ACOG over the Aimpoint.

These days, I'd take a TA11 or TA33 over a 1-4x or 1.5-5x or whatever scope, until you get up into the SuB Short Dot territory. I had a 1-4x and it always stayed on maximum magnification. With the ACOG you can go ahead and make it a non-issue, and you get some good glass in a relatively compact package. The only thing you really miss out on is the ability to dial elevation/windage, but unless you're talking 250+ yards it's not a big deal, and at that point don't you want more magnification than a 1.5-5x offers anyway?

ACOG pros:
- great on medium-sized targets from 50-250 yards and large targets out to 400-500
- nice glass
- no batteries
- very durable/reliable

ACOG cons:
- not as good as a red dot up close, not as good as a scope beyond 100-200
- ballistic reticles may not match your particular load/gun
- tritium eventually needs to be replaced (10-12 years?)
- turrets can't be dialed on the fly - you have to embrace the holdover concept

Just my thoughts, from someone who has tried many an optic.
