Re: I am headed to the gun show 12/10/11
I passed on what I thought was two very good deals. One was a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 caliber with about a six inch barrel. It was marked 375 but the older gentleman went to 300 at closing time. The gun was a little worn but well worth 300. The second was a Springfield compact 1911 V-10 in .45 caliber. It was marked 625 but the guy came to 575 close to closing time. It was a Bi Tone finish or I probably would have bought it. Maybe not a really smoking deal but I think the gun was worth that. Some of the guys prices are starting to come down but some are still way over priced. One example was a Ruger SR 40. I saw it on one table for 499 and the guy didn't want to deal much at all. I think he came to 475 plus tax and told me he got that all day. I saw the very same gun on another table for 399 plus tax which is a fair price. I saw Rock Island .45's from 429 all the way to over 500. I did pick up 1000 small pistol magnum primers for 32 dollars but just couldn't squeeze the trigger on either of the pistols. I'm wanting a Ruger Gunsite Scout and couldn't have all of them so I'm holding out for the rifle.

We enjoyed seeing and talking with you guys that stopped by the table. We were of the opinion that this was the best show we've been to in a while. It seemed there were more dealers willing to deal than at most other shows we've been to.

As a gun dealer, I thought it was a pretty good show. Not a large crowd, but steady. Sales were good and potential customers on the best behavior.
Only had two that I had to run off (straw purchase) the whole weekend.

A straw purchase is when somebody tries to buy a gun for someone else who cannot legally buy for themselves. The first question on the 4473 form ask if the gun is for the buyer.

We managed to make a customer mad too. He wanted to drop off a rifle to be worked on but couldn't produce any ID. I know the guy but still need something to put in our books when we log it in. I told him that someone else could drop the gun off but I'd have to do a 4473 to transfer it back to him. He was not pleased. To top it off, he has ran a gun business for years. He knows the law but he expecting us to bend on the law for him. We will bend over backwards to help our customers but draw the line at doing anything illegal. It's kind of offensive when people that you know expect you to skate around the law on their behalf especial when they know better. I hated to lose the business but it aint worth losing the license just because somebody is weird about producing some ID.

You have to watch your back in this business, they dont like it to much when you break the law. You did the right thing.
