Velocity loss

Post by jbpmidas on Mon Dec 12, 2011 6:52 am

Does anyone know an approximate velocity loss from a 4" .357 Magnum as compared to a 5"?

Hopefully someone out there has chrony data!

I'm lusting after a 686 and am trying to decide between a 4" and 5". I'd like to deer hunt with it and be able to carry it if I so choose.

Thanks!

I have read that as well in a couple places. 20Fps Per inch.

I have a bunch comparing a 4" GP 100 to a 2 1/2" S&W mdl 19, shooting 357 mag. It's not going to be much at all going from a 5" to a 4".

125gr Rem jsp 1256 fps to 1140 fps
140gr XTP 1198 fps to 1093 fps
158 LSWC 1029 fps to 922 fps

I have several and they all land close to the same percentages. Not much in my opinion. The more important thing, in a handgun bullet, is accuracy for the load you want to use.
