Woud like to get some input on single action .22. I will be used by a 13 year old to learn on. Would like to keep cost down, but no junk. Also dose any one know about any contest here in N.Miss or Central where he and myself could go. Would like for him to see what is going on the shooting world. Meet people that permote good hunting and fire arm practices.

Re: Single action .22
do you mean a single action revolver or a single shot rifle? Magnolia in Byram has a 22 f-class match that is very professional and safe.
My thoughts on single action revolver are a ruger single six, or an H&R. I shoot a Heritage arms people say is not any good but ask anyone who has seen me shoot snakes with it or shoot at the range with it. Its accurate as all get out.
rifles- I have a marlin crown prince made in 1967 for my son. It is a single shot with black walnut stock and a cocking ring instead of a button. I love it and he does too. Found it at a gun show for 60$, The stock needed refinishing I'll take a pic and show you when I get a chance.

Re: Single action .22
There is really only one single action 22 to consider that is decent and affordable and that is a Ruger Single Six. I see them for around $200-250 used pretty regular. The Bearcat is cute as they come, but they are hard for me to hit with. The Colts are nice as well, but are high. Stay away from those junky pot metal things with the safetys that I saw this weekend at Bass Pro and Academy. I am sure other shops sell them as well. Didn't look close enough to notice a brand, maybe Heritage? Pure garbage IMNSHO

For a rifle, go to a gun show and look for any of the old Remy or Win bolt action .22's. I have the one my grandfather bought my dad back in the 50's. Very accurate and safe and fun to shoot. (bit long though for a small kid).

I re-did the stock myself, should have used satin.
My first gun was this:

Which is a "survival rifle". It is small and good for youth. But the design can leave a blood blister if you aren't careful where you put your left hand.

Sounds like some good advice. +1 on the ruger single six. Others may disagree, but I would recommend a double action .22 revolver. This is an excellent and inexpensive way to teach good trigger control and follow-through on a handgun (much cheaper than with a .38 or other calibers. Also, +1 on the rifle advice from pinetor. And, +1 on the .22 rimfire F-class at Byram. We love those matches!
Some of us coach kids in the 4-H shooting sports. I am a pistol and rifle coach in Rankin County. 4-H has some great opportunities for kids. I'll PM you with my cell phone. Call me sometime and we can discuss about options that you may have in your part of Mississippi with 4-H.

Don't let people fool you about the Herington and Richardson or the High Standard, both are extremely excellent well made accurate pistols. A High Standard vs. a Ruger is a toss up to me. Notice I did list the Ruger first though. Its harder to find a High Standard. as far as the Heritage arms I told you people would say the heritage is junk. I'll challenge any of them with it though.

Another Ruger Single Six vote. I have 2 single sixs and 1 DA H&R 949 and the Ruger is a much better built and more accurate revolver. I have read good things about the Heritage (esp. considering the price) but I have not shot or owned one so I will not comment further on it.
I will mention you might want to see if you can find a used Single Six without the .22mag cylinder (unless you really want the .22mag) I have one that I bought NIB with both cylinders and I never shoot the 22 mags. If I want to shoot something more expensive than .22lr I will step up to a centerfire.
Finding one without the mag cylinder should bring the price down. I bouth a used stainless one last year at a pawn shop in Southaven for $215 out the door. Itonly came with the .22lr cylinder and that is all I need. The gun is more accurate than I will every be.
Finding a used Ruger Single Six for around $200 is the best deal in .22lr (IMHO). If you even remotely take care of it your grandchildren will shoot it.
