Ball powder in 308
Like the topic says what ball powders work well in 308 that you don't have to use magnum primers with?
Re: Ball powder in 308
Try AA2520. But it is temperature sensitive. I have not personally used it in .308, but it shoots well in a 6.5 Grendel. ANd others I know have used it in .308 in the past. They moved to Varget because of the sensitivity issue.

I have heard good things about it, but have no firsthand knowledge.

Look at AA2230. I use it in everything from 223 to 45-70. All with standard primers. Might not be the most accurate powder, but a GOOD all-round powder.

I've never used a magnum primer in a 308. I use Varget for my sniper loads with std federal primers and I use mil surplus WC846 (ball powder) for my blasting ammo with std primers - both with no issues.

Well I picked up a 8 pounder of TAC today.. This will be my first dealings with the ramshot brand
Re: Ball powder in 308
Okay, call me crazy, but why different powder for "ball" ammo. Seeing as I will be reloading 308's I guess I should know thaes things. I mean, I was going to use IMR 4895.

You should be ok with IMR4895. I tried it, just was not satisfied until I tried Varget.

OHHHH, now I see. We really need a face palm smillie
Varget you say. I have only used Hogden powder, so this would be a good choice.
I will have to do some more reading. Thanks.

Re: Ball powder in 308
Varget is a great powder. Use it in my match .223 stuff and most everyone I know uses it in .308 for 168's, 175's and heavier.
I'm working with 8208 XBR on my .308 loads. Supposed to run faster with the lighter bullets that I'm working with. Gonna try to get up to or above 2950 fps.
