Where does the "7" come from in bolt guns??

Just curious as to where the "7" comes from. I would figure it is a dimension of something.
By 7 i mean like Win. 70, Rem 7,700,Ruger 77 etc.

Any ideas??

Not sure about Remington, Winchester, Ruger or Marlin and the number "7". I know Savage used 110 for it's now famous action because that was its original retail price.

I think it is something that got started with the Big Three that has since been carried on. Something simple. Kind of why Boeing always has a 7 in their large passenger airlines.

Yeah, like Formula 409. Formula 408 didn't do it and they didn't need to go to Formula 410.

all I know is....Gun's with 7 in their model numbers tend to be pretty good...and good sellers

I think it has to do with marketing and advertising, Win 70 was first so eveyone else used a model number similar.

The Model 70 Winchester as made from1937 to 1964 was the rifle by which all others were judged. It is not bad marketing strategy to have a model number that is similar. I have a Winchester Moel 70 Mfg in 1937 with a 4 digit serial number. It still shoots 5/8" 10 sht groups at 100 yards pff the sandbages.

The Rem 700 was introduced in 1962...its still the standard in bolt guns...whether real or perceived...

Maybe kinda like Remington seems to be doing now...I'm leaning more and more to Savage these days...hard for me to say it to cause I gots a butt load of Remmies

iv said this befor.. remington has totally basterdized their rifles.. bean counters screwed winchester. Instead of trying to build a gun to fit everyones budget from $300-$1500 they should make one standard awesome grade rifle that would be in the $800 range.. KISS.. Keep It Simple Stupid

#1 Drop all models of crappy bolt rifles
#2 Start with a trued up blueprinted 700 action standard in all rifles
#3 Install a heavy controur krieger barrel 25inchs
#4 Install crisp breaking trigger
#5 Ship just like that...since they are all the same stocks can be modular, wood, syn, tactical, etc etc just set it in a torque it down..

I think you just described a Savage 12 FTR. Except it has a 30" barrel.

Only one problem - $700 - $800 price point...yeah not happ ning...

Someone is about to tell me they can get a Savage 12 FTR for $700...if so I'm ready to order

BTW - I've had a dealer looking for a Savage Model 12 VLP DBM in 223 1:7 twist for 3 days...nada

You can get them used for under $800 Neck. I've seen them at Accurateshooter.com several times.
