Multiple replies to new users are getting annoying

Post by NRA_guy on Sun Dec 18, 2011 7:18 am

I don't want to start trouble here, but it is getting annoying when I see something like "68 new posts" and have to wade through 60 replies to "new user" posts.

I know that posting 40 or 50 replies to new users is a great way to get your post count up, but it's making it hard for other users to find the gun related posts.

And I have been known to respond to a new user post from time to time.

There ought to some way to check for new posts and exclude the new user section posts.

Go straight to the welcome section and click "Mark all forums read." then return to the home page and click "View unread topics."

Will work -- no problem with folks welcoming new users .... they have to feel "loved" too!! ... and we are such a friendly bunch .... lol

Thanks for the advice jbpmidas.
I was wondering why the sudden jump in welcome messages, when some of the "new" users posted their first message announcing their presence way back in August or so... ??? Why the welcomes in December?

Post count!!!! Some folks keep up with that sort of thing. I try to stay on top of the New Member section instead of doing a whole bunch at once. I do like to see when people from my area join, but I welcome everyon I can.

Another option is the way I use this site.

When I log on, I scroll down and look at the icon to the left. It looks like a little file folder. If it is yellow, there are posts that I haven't read. When it is a Hot topic, the folder will be big and red. There are some sections I don't read much, like the press section or the political section. I just skip over the ones I don't read.

No big deal, just made me curious. I too welcome new members, especially when I see they are from my area or in a place I frequent.

When i started this site, i made a pledge to myself to greet every new member that posted in the welcome center. During my long hiatus, we had many new members post. So, sticking to my pledge, i went and "welcomed " all the new members that had posted. Obviously, i dont have to run up a post count or make sure i have enough posts to sell a gun. Some newer members do it just to get enough posts to get into the guns for sale area. That is a bit aggravating, but i haven't found a way to fix that yet.

A lot of forums make it so posts in "General" areas don't count towards post count and pushes for people to post more in the technical/help related sections. For example, on LS1Tech.com I have close to 4000 posts all of which are from helping others or getting help for myself.
