project "black ops"
so for some time now i have been thinking about doin this project and today i finally put my big boy pants on and jumped in...
Months ago i got a 7 shot 686 and had intended on sending it off to Bob Cogan at Acurate Plateing and Weaponry(my most favorite smith) to be Cerakoted black while leaving the cylinder alone giving it a contrasting look.
For those that dont know about Cerakote I will give you the short version.. its a ceramic based hi temp paint that i would say is on par with Black T. In its early days I hated the stuff... it acted like a lapping compound and would eat up tolerance critical areas. Thank god they worked that out and added in some self lubricating properties.
so now to it...

the above is the scary part = ( ... dang triggers on a smith are spooky and im pretty sure its gonna take me a sold hour or two to get that trigger group back together and running again

thats it broke down. I shined up the cylinder but its kinda hard to tell with camera phone

so i'm going to try and do something a little different.... im going to try and black the flutes while leaving the rest high gloss stainless.. This was the only thing I could come up with that would take a little hit from the blasting booth.. (any other suggestion welcomed)
These are the colors i have to work with

should be enough to do a desert theme on my hk91 and black my revo with some to spare.
this is the theme for the hk91.. pic is a shotty but you get the idea

more to come.. i got the parts in a acetone bath waiting on some sand blasting!

Saw a cool homemade oven the other day for cerakote. Do you need to borrow my airbrush setup?

Something like this? Hey I do need to post up my airbrush system for sale anyway. It's a Iwata with a revolution bcr gun

Make sure you either pull all the springs out or don't set the heat too high. Springs are tempered and high heat will kill that. I need to get some more cerakote.

I recommend buying the tool to get that spring back in that goes between the trigger and post in the frame. Brownells sells it for $20.
Anxious to see how your project turns out!
How much for the brush dirty?

i hope it dont turn out TO well lol.. i want to actually use this pistol for action pistol matchs next season so im gonna do a trigger job on it while i got it busted down.
Re: project "black ops"
SGMJody has two 686's. One is the 6 shot, one is the +. They are both Pro series and the triggers are PERFECT! He says if I can find a regular 686 he can make the trigger match his. I got to sell my xD(M)9 first though.

With the cerakote and the powder coating, will the engraving (S&W Logo, model number and such) be filled in?
I got an old 64 you could borrow to do a test run if you want. Can't hurt it and I only gave $70 for it 20 years ago. Don't care what it looks like, just a truck gun anyway. Interested on how yours comes out. I got a few older models wouldn't mind doing something like that also but I can't color within the lines much less airbrush something.

I like the dark earth and black scheme, that's going to look good. Can't wait to see it.

cerakote is is about 8 times thinner than a sheet of paper.. i highly doubt it would fill in.. no plans for powder coating the gun but that would fill in.. Sid let me see how bad of a migrane i get putting this trigger back together.. if it aint to bad i might take on another project gun = )

I have taken about 3 or 4 of these completely apart, right down to the bare frame. There's a few springs that are terrible to get back in, not fun. I em excited to see the finished product.

Re: project "black ops"

well this was a learing experiance and got a few extra grey hairs out of it...
learned a couple things today.. when the instructions say blast with 100grit aluminum oxide... blast it with AO !! dont say hmmm this other blasting media will work..WRONG!!!
second thing i learned was never assume your spray gun has the same tip in it that you left in it..
Re: project "black ops"
if you will notice at the muzzle the finish didnt stick and there are a couple other places i used 220gr AO thinking it will do but it didnt provide enough "bit" so after christmas im gotta blast it with some 100 and start over...

Not too shabby. I like to hand sand everything or use sanding sponges to get in the tight spots.
