Dillon Square Deal is back
I have had my .38 Spl Dillon Square Deal since 1984. There have been some small issues that I repaired myself, with free parts furnished by Dillon. Late this year I started to have serious issues with the press. It would flip primers and not drop charges. I sent the press back to Dillon 12 days ago. It arrived by FEDEX this morning. They replaced the powder measure, all the nylon bushings, shell plate and indexing mechanism and the priming mechanism. Total charges $205.23 incuding shipping, all charges paid in full by Dillon. A no
guarantee.
I do not know of any manufucturer of reloading tools that has a no cost guarantee that covers a 27 year old press.

I've been wanting a Square Deal here lately, just don't know what caliber I would get it in. Does the .38 model load .357's as well?

You should try it the other way. The .357 works well for my .38 but the .38 dies are to short to size the .357 correct.

So if I get one for revolvers, I should get the .357?

Dillon lists a separate part number for .38 and .357. Need someone with experience on this.

I think you are right. I have inadvertantly tried a .357 mag case on the SD .38 and the case bell looked like the bell on a TUBA. I don't think the expaning die could be adjusted high enough to make the proper bell on the straight case.

If I ever get one, I'll call Dillon first to be sure.

There is definately a difference between the .38 and the .357. You can use the .38 for the .357 but it won´t size it at the complete length. The other way is better.

The second stage is where the bell comes and the powder is dropped. It can be adjusted up and down just like the bullet seating die. If you use a caliper you can measure the height of the dies and go from .38 to .357 in no time or vise-versa. Mr. Doug is right, a SDB set up for .38 will stretch a .357 case out big time!

This is the reason my next press will be blue. I'm thinking 550 but haven't 100% made my mind up.

If it is possible for you buy the 650. Its much better than the 550 and with the extra station you can have a powder check which is a good thing to have.

I'm a big Dillon fan and have owned four Dillon presses along the way and still have two on the bench, a 550 and a Super 1050. I've loaded a bit on 650 and Square Deal, too, and if you are considering buying a Dillon press, I think it is worthwhile reading "Which Dillon?" here: http://brianenos.com/pages/dillon.html It's very accurate, in my opinion, and worth the read.
