Carrying during the holidays?

Post by justjoe on Sat Dec 24, 2011 7:47 pm

Do you carry during family get togethers? I try to give my family the benefit of the doubt by setting aside my full size carry piece in favor of a small Kahr 9mm. I'm still carrying regardless. All seriousness you never know. I have some family members that normally carry that don't during the holidays and I am disappointed.

The company I keep does not determine whether or not I carry.

Ha something was mentioned by my fiance's BIL last Easter about what was I carrying, so I told him, and one of the cousin's husband was fascinated by the fact that I carried at all(he's a gun owner but doesn't carry), and was really astonished by the fact that I was carrying to a family get together. Didn't bother him in the least but he takes every chance he can get to crack a joke about what I plan on doing if one of the kids gets too close to my Easter basket or something ha.

I carry no matter what. And I wear a sturdy rig so I don't hesitate to play around with my nieces and nephews either(within reason obviously, so I don't wrestle with them while armed or anything). I don't dial it down a notch either. It's either a 1911, Browning Hi-Power, or I guess dialed down would be my g26.

Interesting topic for sure. Curious to see how many actually say that they don't carry at get togethers

The family doesn't need the benefit of the doubt, the family is who I'm protecting.

I should have specified in the original posting that the glock is close by just not on my person as usual. It's probably best since my gun owning family members aren't carrying there. I could arm one with my little nine if given the time.

When I have family over I keep my carry gun for the day on me and the rest(loaded or not) in the safe, because I have two very small nieces(both in their TERRIBLE 2s) that think everything is theirs to grab. The nephews(4 and 6) have shot several of my guns(.22s and my LCR with Fed .38 ball ammo) along with some of their dad's, and are exposed to them so much I view them as SLIGHTLY more trust worthy, but let's face it, a kid is going to be a kid, so I'd rather not give them the chance to make a mistake when its completely avoidable.

I understand why you'd want to relax a bit at the holidays, but for me "close by" implies it's either on me or in the safe with the safe door wide open and me standing in front of it. Anything less than that for me is either too far away or too much of a risk with children running around.

Just had a conversation on ccw for Xmas dinner with the family.

And in AAR fashion, I stood watch over the turkey carving while carrying my DB 380 loaded with hornaday critical defense .... Smile

had my cross breed supertuck and glock 23 on all night tonight for my side of the family get together. The only one who knew was 2ndammendment on here, and he only knew because he showed me his new LC9 and LCP that he just got this week. We had our get together at the compound anyway. Lots of talk about the well going in, burrying the storage container, making the broken tractor into a bulldozer, and other sorts of things. Seems like they are all getting on the same page these days.

Other than work restrictions...

It matters not the day, the place or who is around

Been shot at before...it aint never gonna happen again....without return fire....

No gun / guns is just like walking outside naked to me

Let me check ( inhale. exhale. ) Yes I am still breathing = yes I am carrying. I carry everywhere all the time when not prohibited by w*rk/legal prohibitions.

Most of my family doesn't know that I carry or when I carry. My wife knows sometimes. And, more importantly, I hope they never have to find out that I do carry!

Yep. The rest of family would worry about my sanity if I admitted to being unarmed or not having a knife in my pocket.

Of course, any idiot dumb enough to try take down one of my family get togethers will be in for one hell of a firefight.
