Remington 887 nitro mag

Post by hawghound on Mon Dec 26, 2011 10:09 am

Last week I stopped by my local gun shop and found a good buy. Someone had traded a Remington 887 28" without even trying to clean it. It looked like they left it outside in a sandbox full of muck. Their laziness = my savings. I took it completely apart, cleaned it up, and it looks like new. Overall it is a good gun except:

First, the thought that it does not rust is false. There is steel showing in a number of places and Remington doesn't treat those parts with any type of quality rust protector. The bluing was very thin.

Second, the vent ribs on top of the barrel collects dirt, which you have to clean out with a thin blade.

Third, there is a very small spring mechanism in the assembly (which is hard to take out) that locks up if dirt/sand gets in it.

Fourth, due to pressure on the mechanism - if the forend isn't completely forward, you can't unlock the bolt.

Fifth, there is no accessories for it.

Other than that I have not found anything wrong with it. I have number of 870 super mag camo - so I am thinking of selling the 887 but first I would like to hear what others think about the shotgun.

What does everyone think about this shotgun?

Those two reasons are my problems with it. The others can be mostly overlooked in my opinion, but the fact that the forend having to be completely forward before you can push the button to pump it is my biggest problem. Other than that I like the gun, but in my opinion I would prefer the 887's main competitors; a benelli nova or a stoeger P350.

IF they would dura-coat all of the steel and fix the forend/mechanism problem, it would be a great shotgun. It is very tight and armored like a rhino.

If I keep it, I think I will take it to birdsong and see what they can do with it.

I really do like the armor coating on it seems like a great idea. No dinging in the duck blind and like you said no rust at least where it is protected by the armor. I think it adds a little unnecessary bulk though but the benefits outweigh that detriment

I love mine, havent had a prob. with it yet, i took mine apart and sprayed all the exposed steel with a silicone spray used for food processing equipment and havent had any rust issues, it has been in the duckblind in the rain and is holding up good.
