It acts as a hand stop so you hold it the same each time.

A hand stop to keep your hand from going any further down the barrel or as a short vertical grip, to pull the weapon back into your shoulder.

Joe that's why I'm glad I got the ammo for Christmas my dad picked up a 420 round dry box of 5.56 and 4 50rnd boxes of 223's so I should be good for a little while at the very least a couple of weeks lol.

ok folks I have a newbie AR question I ordered a fore-end for my new s&w m&p-15 the current guard is roughly 7 inches "carbine" length and the new guard i ordered is the mid-length will this still work if I remove my front sight or do I need to send the one back and order the carbine length guard? I intentionally ordered the mid-length for the extra space on it but I called after ordering it and talked to a person at brownells and they said it would not fit but I tend no to trust some of those folks because i have run into several who had less of a clue about what they were talking about than I did so i figured i would ask here before sending it back the current guard is roughly 7 inches on a 16 inch barrel and i ordered a 12 inch guard. Any info on this would be much appreciated thanks in advance.

Steven.

You'd have to get a free float one and cut down or replace the front sight.
