anyone like .357 carbines?

Post by ezgo on Tue Dec 27 2011, 10:26

Just wondering about a .357/.38 special carbine.........

I haven't seen any mention of them on the forum, but it would seem to be a good (and fun) short range rifle, using ammo that is reasonably priced to purchase or easy to reload. Are they accurate shooters?

There is a friend of mine that doesn't get on the net that has a Marlin 1894 and he shoots it nearly every day at magnolia on the West 50 offhand at a 6" and a 4" square steel plate hanging from the corner. It's a very fast handling, pointable rig that he uses it and one in .44mag in heavy cover before the leaves fall off the trees.

Captian-03 can vouch for his accuracy too.

My brother in law traded for one. It was an extremely fun shooter!

I have two 1894 Marlins. I looked for a long time before I found one and about a month after I bought my first one another just kinda showed up so I bought it also. I actually put it on here for sale a while back. I'm fixing to mount a simmons 3x9x50 scope on it and I've been collecting brass to reload. I'm wanting to put together some 180 grain hornady XTP's to try on deer. Both of mine shoot very well and unless somebody just comes up with the cash I'm going to keep both of them.

I know it doesn't count but I bought a Rossi ranch hand in 38/357 and is registered as a pistol. Bought it a good price 6 months b/f they were shipped (dealer wanted to buy it back at a little profit for me b/f it went out but I wanted a new toy). It has one of those John Wayne looping lever. As much as I like the Duke, I have no desire to spin a loaded firearm.
Would like a full size one. Think I'd go with .45 LC though. They are proud of those rifles.

I have a Marlin 1894C that is a fun and accurate gun. It is great for reloaders-- I've put 158 grain bullets down range at 2000 fps. Bullet selection is important when pushing velocities -- most bullets in 357 are designed for pistol velocities/performance. Reloading 357 is less expensive and less time consuming than reloading 30-30. The Marlins are hard to find today, but a friend recently bought a Rossi 1892 that he loves.

The reloading data would be the same when reloading for the carbine or for a revolver? Right?

Any load data for 357 pistols can be used for the carbine and the velocity from the carbine will exceed the velocity from a pistol. However, there is load data for 357 mag in a carbine and for which the publisher states that it should not be used in pistols. Additionally, because of the longer barrel - the 1894 Marlin is 18.5 inches long - slower burning powders can be used.

I had a Marlin 1894 in .357 and could kick myself for letting it go several years ago but I was looking for something else at the time. I have one in .44 that will not be leaving.

It's sickening what some people will do to a gun. yell I keep that one in the back of the safe so I don't have to look at it.

hoping to pick up a 1894c at some point. seems like a real fun gun to keep around. they aren't all that bulky and with .38 should be a good gun to have around for plinking.
