Anybody trade with Bud's Guns?

Post by jbpmidas on Tue Dec 27, 2011 2:21 pm

I requested a quote to trade with them. Anybody actually traded with them that can tell me what to expect?

No, but I'd love to know what your impressions are after you get the details. I've always figured they were just about like every other gun dealer we've ever tried to trade with. Their stuff is worth top dollar, but ours ain't worth spit. I've only ever made one decent trade with a gun dealer and they said they made a costly mistake. Didn't appear to cost them that much to me, though. That's why it doesn't bother me one bit to unload a dud on them occasionally. I certainly wasn't going to sell it to an individual and their offer seemed to cover them pretty well just the same. There's one of mine in a local shop right now that's been there for over two years and will probably never sell. Think it bothers me? Not one bit. They've screwed me out of enough to more than cover it. They made the offer and I accepted, period. I never said one word of untruth about the gun, of course, the reason being, I didn't say much at all about it, other than I'd take their offer.Smile I would be interested to know how Bud's treats you, though. Who knows, they might actually give you an honest non-pawn shop offer. If so, I may try a trade sometime.

I didn't hear back from them today. I'm just trying them out because I need a j-frame to carry and want to trade or sell a Kel-Tec P32 toward it.

I will update with details when I get some.

I got an offer back this morning. I believe it was an extremely low ball offer. I did counter offer, so we'll see.

I hate to hear that, but it's probably about typical. Seems like the cheaper guns usually bring somehwere between half and 2/3rds of what you paid for them and the average gun will bring slightly more than half of what they usually sell for new. Seems amazing to me that almost to a tee, every dealer will tell you that they don't make but $75 to $80 on a gun, yet they will only offer you $250 on a $525 gun and then it winds up in their case priced at $475. Don't know what sort of math that is, but it's not what they taught me and let's not even discuss ethics class. And, they all wonder why we migrate to the internet for our guns. I know 3 honest dealers in MS and all 3 are affiliated with this board. I think there may be another one in Columbus, but I've yet to meet him. I'm sure there are others scattered about, but not here in Central MS. For new guns, I shop either online, or with one of them, period. If it weren't for the competition aspect, I wouldn't personally care if the rest went out of business, because I won't be shopping with them anyway. I'd say it was pure greed, but it's not. I think it's more just poor business skills, because even at the rediculous prices they charge, none are getting rich.

We've got a dealer here in Amory that gives us the best prices on new firearms. He orders them and does not carry any stock. He doesn't accept trades though.

Yeah, dishonest was probably a little harsh. I realize they're just trying to provide a service and make a reasonable profit. I really don't have a problem with that concept, either. But, please don't tell me you only need to make $75 and then low ball the heck out of me and mark it top dollar after I'm gone. I also realize they have overhead to deal with and that $75 a gun may not cover that, but by the same token, I'm not quite that stupid. From what I read around here, there are quite a few honest gun dealers around that do treat people decent and I appreciate them. Shame a few hurt the reputations of the many. Sorta like used car salespeople. I think the main thing that hurts is the association with pawn brokers. Pawn brokers deal in a different way than I've ever been forced to deal with and I'm not gonna give anyone my gun, unless they're a family member or sleeping with me.Smile If I have a gun that no body wants, I understand I'm gonna take a beating on it, however, if I come in with a nice Glock or XDm and you tell me you need to make $75 on a gun, I expect to be offered no less than $375 and possibly $400, if it's really nice, however experience tells me that the normal offer will be around $250 and to me, that's nothing more than an insult that probably won't do anything but piss me off. Guns are my hobby and my hobbies shouldn't cause me grief like that, so I no longer deal with pawn shops. However, in all fairness, we have a couple of members that seem to get some awful nice deals from pawn shops, so I can't condem all of them.

I find the best place to sell a gun is right here. Sometimes I do have to adjust my expectations a little, but most of the time I offer a fair deal and someone takes it. On top of that, if it doesn't sell on the first go 'round, if the price was right, I can hold it a few weeks and chances are it'll sell then. These folks are the best and most knowledgeable gun owners you'll find anywhere. On top of that, they're darned fine people, to boot. If I'm asking too much, someone will certainly come along and courteously explain why. I appreciate that, too.Smile

I agree with most of what you said. Bud's has a used 642 for $289, but you have to be a VIP member. That costs $20. I was going to join. The 642 would have been $289 + $20 + $15 FFL fee. That would have been $324. I was ready to do it, but their computer system is down and they could not process the transaction.

Just placed an order for one round butt S&W Model 10 police trade in. I never heard back from them on my return offer.
