1914 Erfurt Artillery Luger Question

Post by 22lrfan on Tue 27 Dec 2011 - 22:36

I've got a friend who has this gun and is trying to determine the value. They plan to sell it. I know very little about Lugers but I've been doing a lot of reading. All the external numbers match except for the magazine. It does have the wood base magazine. I haven't taken it apart yet to see if all the internal parts have matching numbers. The proof marks seem correct for the gun. The one thing I can't figure out is the "Germany" marking on the left side of the frame. It is double struck. I can't find any pictures of guns that have this marking. Does anyone have any ideas?

Couldn't find any pictures, but did find an old thread on gunboards.com that said there were quite a few double stamped "Germany" Lugers, most think it was because the stamps were done with a machine instead of hand stamped and it would get out of adjustment and they would have to restamp the pistols. Sounds logical to me.
Aren't Erfurt made artillery lugers alot rarer than DWM made pistols?

There were a lot fewer Erfurt that DWM ones made but the prices on Gunbroker for the DWM's are higher. DWM made commercial and military ones. Erfurt only made them for the military and the fit and finish was not as good as the DWM's.

I'm not up on these at all but why would it say Germany instead of Deutschland?

So much for precision German engineering if they can't stamp a name correctly. I suspect there is more to that stamp.

PM me when your friend settles on a price, I may know someone who wants it.

I found this:

After WWII (must have meant WWI - PhillipM) Germany was in dire need of foreign currency, as runaway inflation had made German currency practically worthless. Many Lugers in minty condition were sorted out from military stockpiles and were exported for sale abroad in an effort to gain foreign exchange credits. Those exported to the USA were stamped "Germany" and were sold from 1919 to about 1920 or so, when the production of commercial pistols for export began. So for a short period Lugers were going virtualy directly from the battlefield into the export market with no modifications. Depending on condition, these should be worth only slightly less than a GI bringback example. If all parts match, yours looks like it would be worth in the neighborhood of $700 to $800.

The "Germany" stamp is strange. Are there any marking on the back of the grip? if it was used by the German Army it usally has regimental markings at there too. over here youwould get around $1600 to 1800 if it has the complete all number matching holster and stock and cleaning tools with it. If not you´re at $1000 to1200.

Germany stamped on the side means, made for export.
