How much fun is a taurus judge?

Post by Tennjed on Tue Dec 27, 2011 11:08 pm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have $375 in “toy“ money to spend from Christmas. The local Sportsman’s Wharehouse has the Taurus Judge Public Defender on sale for $369.

I am just looking for a fun plinking gun to shoot around the farm. Put a hurting on the stumps in the pond.
I love single action revolvers and reload for 45 colt already.
I have SD and CC covered (ruger sp101, kel tec p3at & p11).

Is $369 a good deal? So how much fun is the Judge? How bad is recoil (i figure it can not be worse than a full house 357 out of the sp101)? How expensive is 410 shot?

Basically is it accurate enough and is recoil tame enough for it to be a fun shooting gun.

Son got one in a trade. I told him I wanted it but he let me know I didn't. Don't like shooting down guns I have never shot but like I said, Son (big into firearms) said it was a POS. Don't take my word, check around.

Hope it was a distant cousin or the next family reunion could turn out bad (like our's tend to do).

Nope. He knew about the cost of the ammo and how innaccurate it was, and even about a burr that had developed that prevented the cylinder from locking(that he'd fixed for me before). I think he'd actually shot it more than I had at the time. Said he didn't care and he wanted it. I made him a very fair price on it and he hasn't complained yet....honestly he probably hasn't shot it since he bought it either though, and that's been going on 2 years ago.

Granted I'm not in the habit of doing business with family, because I have been burned before, but I made an exception for this one and it hasn't bothered me yet.

My brother has one and it's a good snake gun with the 410 in it. That's the only reason I want one. Other than that, I wouldn't use it for anything else.

I had one, but gave it to my mom as a Home Defense/Snake gun.. It is a lot more useful with the 410s IMO. Recoil is not bad..

Go shoot .410 at a semi-solid target and tell me how appropriate it is for defensive purposes. It'll hurt, but unless it's an extremely hot load I wouldnt expect more than a flesh wound. I had to get at about 5 yds to actually knock plates over with it.....not a viable home defense round IMO

Snake gun? Sure! But I wouldn't trust my life with it against anything bigger than your average snake or other small critter.

I'd much rather have a good medium caliber revolver for home defense purposes if it's someone who's not going to shoot much, and throw some shotshells in there on occasion for snakes.

It's a cool gun and neat idea but it's a solution without a problem. It loses it's cool factor fairly quickly

My brother has one its fun to shoot but the wow factor wears off really fast and it serves no real purpose other than shooting paper and cans.

Imagine what 3 inch number 4's in a hallway would do. Pretty sure you could save the day!!

Better hope it's not a long hallway, or you have a house with a big open room. The range on it isn't good.

I'll stick to my Glock 23 for self defense.

Past 7yds I wouldn't bother with the .410 shells. At that point it's either .45lc or use it as a club/just throw it

Not surprised this turned into a self defense thread. Although I was hoping it would not. I have defensive guns. I am looking for something that is pure fun and different than anything I already have.

Thanks for all the comments. It seems like this could be a fun gun but the fun might wear off. I think I will try it out though. For under $400 it meets the need for something I do not have so we will see how it works out

For just a toy you'll be fine. And when the fun wears off the demand for them is still high enough you won't lose much if anything

Seems like every pawn shop has at least one in the case. Not a good sign.

+1!!!!!

I have a Rexio .410/.45LC. You may remember those; don't know if they still make them. It's about like carrying a small sledge hammer with you, but was a good snake gun, using 4 or 6 shot. I would not want it for any other purpose.

Plates at 5 yards? I wouldn't keep doing that.

Don't worry. One time thing I'm not proud of, nor am I dumb enough to try it again, because even though nothing happened I've wised up a good bit since that time and now know how ugly it could have been.
