Can't be too bad, they sold around 2,000,000 of them. (number pulled from thin air, but I bet counting the predecessor M&P models it's not far off). I have a 4" 10-5, going to be my wife's someday.

Kinda the Chevy Impala of revolvers.

I'm watching an auction on one. It is at $223 right now. I goess it would end up around $260 with shipping and FFL. They are also selling some for $269, shipped. FFL would bring that to $285. Are they worth that? They are police trade ins.

It's in the ballpark. As always it depends on condition. Being a police trade, probably shows wear, but very good internally. I wouldn't go any higher than that. I think 2" & 3" run a little more. See them all the time for $350 up, but I ain't biting at those prices.

I am. A 442 or 642 is in my near future but I saw the price on the Model 10 and was intrigued.

I'd rather have an old Smitty than a new Rossi! And the model 10's can be had for less too.

I would not buy a new Model 10 I have a 5" that was made in 1974. It is hard to beat. I will not not buy a S&W made after 1975. The machining in the new Model 10's is terrible.

I've seen you mention this before, and perhaps I just missed the explanation, but could you give some specifics on why? This from a young-ish guy interested in some older Smith & Wessons.

I think I have decided to order one. Should be a good house/truck gun. If I can shoot it accurately, I may even try IDPA with it. My only concern is the small sights. I can learn to shoot them though.

Are these the ones you are looking at? Quite tempting.

They are hard to beat for your intended purpose. It's under $300 so who cares what happens to it, they are great shooters and handle pretty well. I bought a blued bull barrel trade in for under $200 late last year.

Wull yeah!
Just take it to a smith to make sure it locks up good on each cycle. You may have to get it timed.
It's about the only gun the PPC boys build comp guns from. Best smoothest trigger ever built.

I would like to have one of these myself. For the price seems that it would be hard to beat.

I've got a m60-38 spl that is a great little snub, but the really thin front sight coupled with the narrow notch makes it hard to see them.
But other than that it is a great little revolver.

I have observed deteriorating machine work in S&W revolvers made after that date. A friend asked me to lighten the trigger pull on a lightweight S&W snubbie and I was shocked to see how rough the inside of the frame looked. Also there was a nylon double action sear in the revolver I looked at. Not for me. I look in my 1970's made S&W revolvers and I see worksmanship, good materials and care. I have S&W Model 10, 14 and 28 revolvers.
