To build or to buy, The AR upper

Post by agman7 on Thu 29 Dec 2011 - 14:07

I ordered 5 of the PSA stripped lowers. I have already decided how I want to build most of them. I have been pricing upper components and can't seem to justify buying parts and building vs. buying a PSA complete upper. The cheapest I came out building my own is about $450. We can buy complete from PSA for $399. Anybody else built one cheaper? Components? Vendor?

Armalite has the basic 16" M-4 style upper on sale right now for $399. I ordered one this morning.

Can't beat that for a major name brand upper.

Very Happy

Is that Armalite with the complete Bolt Carrier Group (BCG)? Most deals I find are without the BCG, which then adds an additional 100-200 bucks. EXCEPTIONS: Bunker Hill has a couple christmas specials with them, and the Palmetto Armory has them with their uppers.

I usually go with assembled uppers, unless I can't find what I want. The PSA uppers are GTG.

That's complete, but I just went back to their site and it looks like they're sold out now. I must've got one of the last ones.

They DO still have the same basic upper but without the front sight for the same price.

Thanks for the comments. I will be hitting the Southaven show this weekend to do some window shopping since the recievers will not ship until mid jan. Maybe by Oxford show I will have money for an upper. Any more suggestions will be great as well.

Those are some great prices. I've still got one lower left. I can't make up my mind on what to build. Would really like to build a .458 SOCOM.

...Keep in mind that if you decide to build an upper reciever you may end up with a barrel not drilled for taper pins. Its not a real big problem but you may want to see what I had to go through when i built my last upper with a virgin barrel.

See here:

$399 is a great price for a complete upper and I would go that route if I had to do it again.
